4 MAIN OBJECTIVES OF AGRICULTURE RESEARCH SINDH Evolve improved and high yielding new varieties of different field, fruit and vegetable crops. Develop appropriate and improved production and protection technologies for different field, fruits & vegetable crops to get higher yields. Produce pre-basic, basic, certified and approved seeds of different crops fo further multiplication. Provide facilities to the farmers for testing soil, water and fertilizer samples district level. Suggest measures for reclamation of saline soils. Provide advisory services to the growers for specific and usual problems. Disseminate improved production technologies to the growers.

13 Upgraded soil and water laboratories in 3 districts, which are fully functional, Soil, water and fertilizer samples are analyzed there. Based on analysis report, concerned farmers are recommended fertilizer application and soil fertility improvement measures. 14 Foundation Seed cell BNS, Pre-basic and basic seed of different crops is produced through Foundation Seed cell every year. Pre-basic, and Basic seed is provided to Sindh Seed Corporation, Registered private seed companies and Progressive growers for further multiplication. Quality seed is also produced under public-private partnership with grower seed companies. To strengthen grower seed companies, they are given related machinery on subsidized rate (70 % ).

16 Other salient achievements Mango sudden death managed through trunk injection method. Introduced water saving rice technologies like: - Aerobic rice cultivation - Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) Red Palm weevil in Date Palm was managed through - Use of pesticides (like Movento, alarm plus, larsbon) application thru injection method - Use of Pheromones Identified following biological agents to control major cotton pests including mealy bug. - Aenasius: parasitoid of mealy bug (Local) - Cryptolaemaeus: mealy bug predator

17 Possible areas of investment in Agriculture Research

18 Hybrid seed production Hybrid seeds are popularized in cotton, sunflowr, cucumber, corn, paddy and tomatoes. Around 0% area of these crops could be brought under hybrid seeds, hence, tremendous market for seed. Agriculture research Sindh has land and manpower available with it, which could be utilized for the task. Capacity building and genetic resources are required for this purpose.

19 Tissue culture Three tissue culture laboratories are working in Agriculture Research Sindh at Tandojam and Mirpurkhas At present banana plantlets are being produced there. In addition to further expand program on strawberries, Dates, ornamentals There is wide market of disease free plantlets

20 Floriculture There is vast export potential of cutflowers, flowers & other ornamentals Agriculture Research Sindh can play a vital role on development of floriculture industries on scientific line Orchids, glades, tuberose, roses, jasmine can be grown and promote in Sindh
