2 Functions of Soil & Soil Health Soil health is the capacity of a specific kind of soil to function, within natural or managed ecosystem boundaries, to sustain plant and animal productivity, maintain or enhance water and air quality, and support human health and habitation. 34 Closing Remarks No-tillage (direct seeding)and other reduced tillage practices help protect the soil from erosion and improve soil health through increases in soil organic matter Overtime, these benefits can help improve economic returns. However, other management practices can affect the magnitude of these benefits.
