1 Ohio County Farm & Home News STOCKPILING FOR FALL & WINTER PASTURE The rainfall we have received during July has provided cattle producer and excellent opportunity to stockpile forage for late fall and winter grazing. This is an alternative to storing dry hay for feeding during the winter. Many cattle producers, each year, take advantage of the late summer-fall growing conditions to obtain high-quality pasture for fall and early winter grazing. This practice is called stockpiling. Management decisions for optimum stockpiling include selecting grass species, timing, fertilizing, grazing management or utilization, selecting classes of cattle, and designing grazing systems for efficient utilization. The high quality of stockpiled tall fescue produces good gains on both weaned stock and mature cows. These gains are a response to the high crude protein and digestibility of the fall growth of tall fescue. In particular, the sugar content rises to high levels in response to lower temperatures and shortening day length. This nutritional change does not take place overnight due to the first frost but is spread over time. Full details on how to stockpile fescue is available in the publication AGR-162 Stockpiling for Fall & Winter Pasture available at the Ohio County Extension Office or online at: WOODLAND OWNERS SHORTCOURSE AUGUST 13 th There is still time to register for the Woodland Owners Shortcourse to be held on August 13 th, at the U.K. Research & Education Center in Princeton. The Kentucky Woodland Owners Short Course is a good program designed for anyone that owns woodlands and wildlife in Kentucky, to receive a tremendous amount of management information and resources, that will be useful in making your woodlands and wildlife as healthy and productive as possible. Each year, they rotate the program among different counties and this year the West Region shortcourse will be held on August 13 th at the U.K. Research & Education Center in Princeton, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The WOSC offers two programming tracks: Cooperative Extension Service Ohio County P O Box Clay Street Hartford KY Fax: Green - for woodland owners just getting started Gold - for those already actively managing their woodlands The WOSC is one of the best woodland owner educational opportunities available in the state and anyone with an interest in forestry or wildlife will benefit from attending.
