Scottish salmon - developments & challenges Jamie Smith Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation
Growing importance of aquaculture In 1980 only 9% of the fish consumed by people came from aquaculture, now it is over 50% Aquaculture is the only way to meet the surging global demand for sustainable seafood Worldwide production will have to double by 2030 to meet growing demand (Source: UN FAO)
Scottish production and confidence on the rise Scottish salmon production increased to 158,000 tonnes in 2011 Production has increased for three successive years 86% of companies expressed a desire to grow sustainably over the next five years Strategic plan to achieve annual production of 210,000 tonnes by 2020
Positive impact This confidence and growth is reflected in the industry s contribution to: Communities The Economy Healthy eating
Communities Salmon farming is vital to the rural areas in which it operates, contributing in many ways to vibrant and prosperous communities
The Economy Scotland s largest food export 95,638 tonnes exported in of the top 10 markets grew in volume; Fresh Scottish salmon now reaches 64 countries Emerging markets have seen the most striking increases Far East has risen from 682 tonnes to 6,779 tonnes, up 894% Middle East has risen from 1,340 tonnes to 1,562 tonnes, up 17% The Scottish aquaculture industry was valued in excess of 500million in 2011
Healthy eating Salmon provides an affordable, tasty and healthy source of Omega 3 essential fatty acids Sponsorship of Scottish swimming 1m fresh salmon meals eaten in the UK every day
Issues Regulation Aquaculture and Fisheries Bill Multiple regulatory agencies Increased red tape Planning Sea lice Predators Ill informed activists
Aquaculture & Fisheries Bill Consultation published in December 2011 Draft Bill publication anticipated September 2012 Contentious issues Fixed penalties and Strict Liability Data reporting context & use Lack of balance Lack of understanding of industry Lack of robust scientific evidence Implications for salmon farming
Planning Lack of consistency between Local Authorities Lack of clarity from statutory consultees Inefficient process
Sea Lice Integrated sea lice management Information sharing (industry database) Synchronised production and fallowing Novel treatments Biological control (wrasse)
Predators Duty of care to fish Growing seal population Planning issues with ADDs, etc. Strict licensing conditions Act of last resort
Ill informed activists Media attention Public opinion Political audience EDUCATION & INFORMATION
Positive developments The Scottish salmon farming industry is committed to: Leading welfare standards Progress Sustainability Minimum carbon footprint Technology Premium quality
Leading welfare standards Scottish salmon tops the RSPCA s Freedom Food chart, with an impressive 60% of production participating in the scheme All of SSPO ongrowing companies are involved in the Freedom Food initiative, either already having achieved or working towards accreditation The scheme covers every life stage, including husbandry, stocking density, handling, transportation and harvesting Salmon is by far the largest farmed animal sector to have invested in the scheme
Feed sustainability Farmed salmon FCR has improved dramatically, with many farms achieving a ratio of 1.1kg feed to produce 1kg farmed salmon. Industry works closely with feed manufacturers to share knowledge and enhance efficiency Despite increasing production, the industry s requirement for marine resources used in feed has remained static, with reduced dependency on marine raw materials. Significant investment related to the substitution of fishmeal and fish oil with alternative materials. There is no significant human consumption market for 90% of the feed grade fish caught to produce fishmeal and fish oil
Environmental footprint Salmon farming is an energyefficient way of producing meat, particularly when compared to the farming of land-based animals. The industry is working with The Carbon Trust to produce a best practice guide which will promote energy efficiency and help to further reduce the environmental footprint. The entire industry uses about 150ha of sea (about ¼ of the area of a large sheep farm) Any impacts are local and temporary
R&D New net materials PPE Micro-renewables Robust equipment Scottish Technical Standard Technology
Premium quality... just stunning quality. In my view, this is a world class product Nick Nairn, April 2012
