3 Climate Change: Bangladesh Response Bangladesh prepared it s National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) in November 2005 (updated in 2009) Four Pillars of NAPA o Food security o Energy security o Water security o Livelihood security (including right to health) 3

Bangladesh climate change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP), 2008 and updated 2009 The vision of the BCCSAP is Eradicate poverty and achieve economic and social wellbeing through a pro-poor climate change strategy which prioritize Adaptation, Disaster Risk Reduction; also address low carbon development, mitigation, technology transfer and provision of funding. Six thematic area of BCCSAP Food security, social protection and health Comprehensive disaster management Infrastructure Research and knowledge management Mitigation and low carbon development Capacity building and institutional strengthening 4

6 Strategy Mapping BCCSAP is treated as a part of the overall development strategy of the country Constraints and opportunities are being integrated into the overall plan and program Included in the sixth five year plan Integrated monitoring and continuous evaluation National environment committee chaired by Prime Minister Focal point for all relevant sectoral ministries Wide range network involving NGO, CSO, Private sector, Mass media and International Actors in an inclusive man 6

11 Success under BCCTF Projects 15.4 kilometres of coastal sea dyke have been constructed cyclone resilient houses have been erected. 142 kilometres of embankments have been built. 122 kilometres of river bank protective work have been completed. 535 kilometres of canals have been excavated/reexcavated. 44 water control infrastructures including regulators/sluice gates have been constructed. 11
