1. The challenge 400 M research program for water management in agriculture and food systems, as main challenges for the Mediterranean basin
1. The challenge Water resources in the main Spanish basins Guadiana Guadalquivir Segura Júcar Tajo Ebro Irrigated surface (ha) Water restricted area (ha) Water restricted area over the total (%) Water used by agriculture in the basin (%) Rainfall lower than 450 mm/year Reference Evapotranspiration higher than 1000 mm/year Estimated woody crops water consumption of mm/year
Talk index 1. The challenges 2. LIFE CLIMATREE 3. JPI WW2014 IRIDA 4. Further opportunities
2. CLIIMATREE Importance of woody perennial crops in Spanish Agriculture and landscapes Tree crop Area (ha) Evergreen tree crops Olive (93% for olive oil, 7% table olive. 83% rainfed, 27% irrigated) Citrus (100% Irrigated) Other woody crops (Carobs) Deciduous tree-crops Vineyards (98% for wine, 2% for table grapes. 81% rainfed, 19% irrigated) Almond and other dry fruits (92% almond. 86% rainfed, 14% irrigated) Fruit trees. (Stone and pit fruit trees. 70% irrigated, 30% rainfed Total tree crops
2. CLIIMATREE
2. CLIIMATREE Objectives a) to improve and update the estimated carbon sink accounting within EU through the inclusion of the calculated tree-crop capacity (CO2 t/y). b) to estimate the socioeconomic benefit of tree crops' carbon storage and to evaluate the economic dimensions under different climatic and economic scenarios. c) to improve the design and efficacy of Union environmental and climate policy and legislation. d) to act as a catalyst for, and promote, the integration and mainstreaming of carbon sink objective into Agricultural Sector and its Stakeholders and Decision makers e) to provide a more accurate and increased baseline for carbon sink, and to improve this way the knowledge base for the monitoring and evaluation of effective climate change mitigation actions and measures. f) to improve Agricultural and Environmental Policies at the micro level and to provide a tool for supporting the evaluation of investments related to tree crops.

3. IRIDA Innovative Remote and Ground Sensors, Data and Tools into a decision support system for agriculture water management The general objective is to develop and validate new procedures for determining ET and soil and plant water status. The obtained results will be incorporated into a modular DSS capable to provide end-users recommendations for: 1) on-farm irrigation scheduling in semi-arid and humid regions of Southern and Northern Europe, respectively 2) farming practices and catchment scale water management for the humid Northern Europe mixed agriculture and forestry areas.
3. IRIDA Demo areas Southern Europe) (citrus and peach orchards and irrigation districts) Eastern Europe (Cereal crops) Northen Europe (Agro-forestry systems)
