2 SARDINIA BACKGROUND Sardinia is an island region forming part of Italy, with a population of just over 1.6 million people. The government of Sardinia has invested significantly in the implementation of green public procurement (GPP) in its regional offices since GPP policy has been used as a lever to stimulate a green regional economy
3 Government by using their purchasing power to choose goods, services and works with a reduced environmental impact, can make an important contribution towards local, regional, national and international sustainability goals. It is a market incentive to develop green products and service GREEN PUBLIC PROCUREMENT Government expenditure on works, goods and services represents around 14% of EU GDP.

8 SARDINIA S POLICY Regional Action Plan for Green Public Procurement (PAPERS)... part of which included the "Sardinia Buy Green" campaign, a communication campaign aimed at raising awareness of GPP. The Action Plan included workshops on GPP for regional officials and the establishment of GPP information and technical support desks.

13 EXPECTED RESULTS Improve know-how and experience of public authorities in the elaboration and management of public contracts Promote sustainable management practices among suppliers of catering services Increase the partecipation of local producers in the supply chain for answering green public demand Increase the use of typical and traditional products in public canteens Collect and disseminate good practices (demand and offer side)
14 AGENDA Coordination establishment of a Technical Table on Sustainable Catering with participation of referents of municipalities with more than inhabitants, of hospitals and universities that run public catering services Observatory the creation of an Observatory on demand and offer for sustainable public catering in Sardinia (with focus on food supplies), whose first report analysed the production side and the food demand side of public canteens from the Region Tender elaboration of a prototype tender for school catering with environmental criteria based on national environmental criteria foreseen by the Italian National Action Plan for GPP which include minimum percentages of organic products, PDOs, PGIs, TSGs
15 AGENDA2 Meetings meetings with suppliers (food producers and companies that manage catering services) in order to analyse the obstacles in accessing public tenders and the opportunities offered by green public procurement; Network creation of the Regional Network of Sustainable Canteens; Pilot implementation of a pilot action for the definition of a local sustainable food strategy
