Maize is able to be planted deeper than most other plant species. This allows planting to be optimized based on where the moisture is within the soil profile. Waiting until soil temperatures reach 12C o & above at planting depth will allow for a more uniform germination. Other factors to consider include soil preparation. Excellent seed bed preparation allows for a consistent seed placement that can achieve high seed to soil contact. Depth of seed placement is best between cm with starter fertilizer being added 5-7cm away & 2-4cm below the seed, it is essential to use precision planters that are setup for your particular soil conditions, this will optimize seed placement, soil contact & provide a more uniform germination. Fertiliser Maize silage has the potential to achieve yields in excess of 30DM/T/ha, for this, an effective fertilizer program must be formulated. First set the yield goal for the crop based on manageability, soil type, climate and available moisture and then proceed to conducting soil tests 4-6 weeks prior to the expected plant date. Knowing what is in the soil, you then should use the nutrient use charts to determine total amounts of nutrients required based on your yield target. It is important to know that by budgeting effectively, you will potentially be able to consistently crop the same area for many years. In these situations, it would be advisable to use a conditioning winter crop like Legumes that can improve soil structure and add to the totals of nitrogen within the soil profile. Maintaining a positive balance of available nutrients in the soil profile will greatly enhance how the crop utilizes water, how well the crop will reach each different stage of development, how quickly that crop reaches harvest and how well the crop will yield. Because it will not flower until day length is less than 12 hours 20 minutes, it will maintain a high leaf to stem ratio, with less rank, stalky feed. 9 Forage Sorghum General information Tillering... Tillers are lateral branches that form below ground nodes. The number of tillers that develop is determined by plant population and spacing, soil fertility, early season growing conditions, and the genetic background of the hybrid. Tillers are most likely to develop when soil fertility and moisture supplies are ample during the first few weeks of the growing season and after grazing. Hybrids with a strong tillering trait may form one or more tillers on every plant even at relatively high populations if the environment is favorable early in the growing season. Stocking... Forage sorghums are capable of very quick high yields of fodder. They should be grazed between 80 cm to 1 meter high and stocked heavily enough to keep the crop short (earlier at lower stocking rates or in very good growing conditions). Pastures can be spelled by stocking the forage sorghum at a higher rate. Rotational grazing at high stocking rates is good practice. Alternatively, if the season produces an overabundance of growth, the crop should be cut for hay or silage. This particularly applies to the early planted and vigorous Sudan Grass cross hybrids such as Lush, Everlush and BMR Revolution. As a Cover Crop... Small crop growers have found forages such as Lush to have an important role to play in providing cover for their ground and at the same time providing large tonnages of vegetative material to improve the soil structure when ploughed in. Big quantities of green manure are produced quickly to enable ground to be made available for cash cropping. Under conditions of good moisture and high fertilizer residual, higher planting rates are recommended. Grazing... All HSR Seeds forage sorghums are suited to grazing sheep, beef and dairy cattle. Lush and BMR Revolution are known to often achieve five grazings or four grazings and one cut of hay where enough water and heat units are available. Hunnigreen and BMR Supreme are able to be grazed during summer and then allowed to carry over a big bulk of feed into the winter for breeder or store cattle. Hay and Silage... Forage sorghums have become popular for hay making with Lush, Everlush and BMR Revolution producing excellent quality hay. A conditioner should be used and higher planting rates promote thinner stems and greater leaf ratio. A hay making program in conjunction with grazing has numerous advantages. It enables greater flexibility in the grazing program in the normal fluctuations of the seasonal pattern. Hay and silage making can also eliminate wasted fodder in good growth periods, promote better quality grazing by keeping the crop short and give you the bonus of a replenished hay shed or silage pit. Hunnigreen is outstanding for use as silage and can produce enormous quantities of green chop. BMR is the first silage specialist BMR forage available, and will provide a higher feed value silage along with a large bulk of feed. Its large white grain head also contributes to the final feed value in the finished silage. BMR Supreme and Hunnigreen have shown they can produce an abundance of material with good sugar levels that can be pitted or made into hay if managed correctly Caution... All sorghums contain Prussic Acid, but it is most potent in plants under 6 weeks old, younger re-growth or in plants stressed from lack of moisture, cold weather or nutrient deficiency. Sudan Grass cross hybrids such as Lush, Everlush and BMR Revolution carry lower levels of Prussic Acid than the sweet sorghum crosses. Prussic acid issues can be partially managed by feeding high sulphur content stock blocks. Adding sulphur to the diet will ensure higher utilization of the crop at feeding. Nitrate poisoning is different to prussic acid poisoning and can occur in any fodder crop where very high nitrogen uptake has occurred during the growing period. A leaf test should be taken where you believe there is a risk of poisoning.
