Hillside Pastures LLC 6511 Hillside School Road Spring Green, WI Date: February 2015 To: Anyone interested in Devon cattle From: Jeremy Engh, Sale Manager Linda and Daniel Marquardt, Sale hosts Re: Upper Midwest Devon Cattle Workshop and Sale We have received so many inquiries about our upcoming sale that we decided to assemble this informal preview of what to expect in May. We will be putting together a more formal sale catalog once all of the consignments and terms of the sale are finalized. So far, the following five Devon breeders have agreed to consign cattle to this select sale. Feel free to give them a call. Eckstein Devons Sheldon Headings Hidden-Vue Farm David Nortunen Hillside Pastures Daniel Marquardt Lakota Ranch Jeremy Engh Rolling Meadows Devon Jamie Hostetler Standards for cows and heifers. The standards for the females going through the ring are high----- no cull cows, no open cows unless they have a calf at their side, and no open heifers unless they have never been exposed to a bull. We will also offer to sell quite a few females that have been checked for pregnancy using ultrasound to identify the sex of the calf that should be born in the next few months. In all cases where ultrasound was used we will reveal our vet s opinion. Of course, we can t guarantee his judgment was correct, but in our definition of a select sale a potential buyer is entitled to know everything we know about the cow or heifer in the ring. Standards for bulls. We will sell only purebred bulls, registered with the Red Devon USA, and only bulls that are at least 18 months of age. Furthermore, all bulls will be subjected to a breeding soundness exam administered by a third party prior to the sale and a visual examination by Jeremy Engh to ensure they meet the Devon breed standards. They will not go through the ring unless they pass both examinations. So, take a look and enjoy!
Hidden-Vue Farm Julie Z2 Class: Open Heifer Consignor: Hidden-Vue Farm Date of birth: March 26, 2013 Producer: Hidden-Vue Farm
Eckstein Devons B304 Class: Open Heifer Consignor: Eckstein Devons Date of birth: Producer: Eckstein Devons Sheldon Headings, consignor of this purebred yearling Devon heifer, has initiated her registration with the Red Devon USA association and her pedigree will soon show at the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation website. She will be ready to be bred by sale day. Her parents certainly need little introduction to serious Devon breeders! Sire: CRT Lenoir's Creek Rodeo #D22314 Dam: Lenoir Creek X304 #D 43420
Lakota Z20 Class: Bred Heifer Consignor: Lakota Ranch Date of Birth: December 7, 2012 Producer: Lakota Ranch Lakota Z20 moved to Hillside Pastures in Wisconsin in the summer of 2014 and was bred to Lakota Red Prince Z36. Ultrasound testing in the Fall of 2014 suggests she will deliver a heifer calf in late May of 2015.
Rolling Meadows Amy Y21 Class: Bred Heifer Consignor: Rolling Meadows Devon Date of Birth: May 29, 2012 Producer: Rolling Meadows Devon Amy was bred to Kendall Shrock s Tirranna bull, Circle K Devons Emperor ET, and is expected to have a calf at her side before the Upper Midwest Devon Cattle Sale on May 16, 2015
Hillside Virginia X8 Class: Bred cow Consignor: Hillside Pastures Date of Birth: May 22, 2011 Producer: Hillside Pastures Virginia has been bred to our herd sire, Lakota Red Prince Z36, and our vet is predicting a heifer calf should arrive early June 2015
Hillside Peterson X3 (AI) Class: Senior Bull Consignor: Hillside Pastures Date of birth: April 26, 2011 Producer: Hillside Pastures Peterson weighed 75 lbs. at birth and 1335 lbs. at 589 days (ADG = 2.14 lbs) A frame score 3 bull and weighing in at around 1700 pounds, Peterson is our preferred bull to use on heifers Coming four years of age and sire of 34 calves to date with average birth weight of 75 lbs.
Percentage Devon Class: Bred Cows Consignor: Hillside Pastures Producer: Hillside Pastures Hillside Pastures 11-5 (AI) Daughter of Henderson Cherokee, 2009 ADCA Champion bull, will be offered for sale at the Upper Midwest Devon Cattle Sale For the first time, Hillside Pastures will be offering to sell the best of the young cows that were born on the farm after we exposed a group of commercial Red Angus cows to Devon bulls. Two of these young cows are coming upon four years of age and are carrying their third calf. The other two will be three years of age at about the time they are expected to deliver their second calf. All four are bred to herd sire, Lakota Red Prince Z36, and our vet is projecting three of these young cows will deliver a heifer calf. Hillside Pastures % Devon heifer carrying a heifer calf for delivery in June of 2015 Detailed information on each of these heifers will be posted in the near future. The following table summarizes some basic information. 11 High Percentage Devon Class: Open Heifers Consignor: Hillside Pastures Producer: Hidden-Vue Farm In 2014 we decided to focus on Devon seed-stock and leave the finishing of grass-fed beeves to others. In an effort to increase the density of Devon genetics in our cow herd, we purchased 21 rambunctious heifers---- all at least 75% Devon---- from David Nortunen, owner/operator of Hidden-Vue Farm in northern Wisconsin. Hidden-Vue Farm heifers the best of this class will be sold on May 16, 2015 In keeping with the objectives of the Upper Midwest Devon Cattle Sale to sell the cream of the crop we are prepared to offer two creative options for buyers. OPTION 1 - JEREMY S CHOICE. The sale manager, Jeremy Engh, will select the top 3 Hidden-Vue Farm heifers in the class of 2014 and we will sell them at the auction on May 16. The buyer will have the option to leave the heifers at Hillside Pastures with our purebred Devon herd for exposure to our new senior sire, Lakota s Red Prince Z36, between July and until September. OPTION 2 BUYER S CHOICE. The winning bidder will have the right to select up to 5 HVF heifers in the Fall of 2015 after ultra-sound examination by our vet to determine the viability, the sex, and the expected arrival date of the calf. Think about it!
Commercial Red Angus Heifers-Bred to Devon bulls Class: Bred Heifers Consignor: Hillside Pastures Producer: Terry Pretsch and Driftless Dells Since we started designing and building a grass-based cow/calf herd capable of producing steers and heifers for the grass-fed beef market, we have been very impressed with the progeny that come from a good quality commercial Red Angus cow bred to a powerful Devon bull. Due to the demand in 2014 for this type of cow and our pressing need to make some room on our small farm for more Devon cows, we sold all ten of our original commercial cows that were bred to one of our Devon bulls. On May 16 th of this year we plan to sell the balance of our Red Angus females, most of them heifers that will be two years of age in the next few months. In an effort to address the diverse needs of potential investors in Devon genetics, we have done something different: we have done pregnancy checks using ultrasound and with a great deal of certainty our vet is prepared to project both the expected birthdate and the sex of the calves that will be born later this year. Red Angus heifers to be sold at the Upper Midwest Devon Cattle Sale Number of bred Sex of calf Approximate Due Date heifers in Group 1 Too old to determine with ultrasound Before sale day 2 Bull Before sale day 1 Bull Shortly after sale day 1 Bull End of July 3 Heifer Before sale day 1 Heifer Early June
