GmbH Dr.-Werner-Freyberg-Str Laudenbach Germany Dear Distributor and Customer, This issue of the Marketing News will start with a series of reports on the distribution partners of all around the world. We will begin with Greece where the company Agroza is the exclusive agent of for many years. We feel that with this kind of information the partners learn more about each other and this may enhance the exchange of experience and ideas between the companies selling and / or applying the fumigants and other products for stored product Dr. Constantine Zaracovitis started his experience of using Phosphine Fumigants already in After a period of 15 years work with all classes of pesticides such as insecticides fungicides, herbicides, rodenticides, growth regulators etc he founded Agroza Agrotechnical LTD in The aim of this company is the marketing of pesticides and performing large scale fumigations. Since 1983 Dr. Zaracovitis has built a sales network of more than 1000 dealers all over Greece. Agroza is the exclusive distributor of Detia, Phostoxin and Magtoxin brand phosphine fumigants and agroza is the leading fumigation company with these products. They sell and use all current presentations being offered by Detia Degesch: Pellets, Round Tablets, Flat Tablets, single bags, bag chains, bag belts, blankets and Degesch Plates and Strips. In the 1990s, Agroza started an exclusive collaboration with an Italian manufacturer of fertilizers, growth stimulants etc for agricultural and home garden use. Besides this Agroza is the manufacturer Tel.: 0049/6201/ Fax: 0049/6201/ export@detia-degesch.de protection of Detia Degesch. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families in the name of all employees a peaceful and Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year 2007! Yours truly, Jürgen Wenzel The Representative in Greece: Agroza Ltd. A company profile of a number of rodenticides based on various active ingredients which are being distributed in its business field in Greece. In the meantime the manufacturing unit was registered with both Ministry of Industry and Ministry of Agriculture. The volume of sales of fumigants was steadily increased trough the years. Dr. Zaracovitis and his team of about six Agronomists and a similar number of office and labor collaborators has effected the development of the company which is situated in Athens. The manufacturing site is located in Arma, about 75 km north of Athens. Greece has an annual grain production of between 2.5 and 3 Mio tonnes, which is mainly maize and wheat. Other commodities which are being fumigated in Greece are rice, tobacco, vegetables, seeds, space and ship fumigation. Although the grain production is quite low compared to other grain producing countries within the European Page 1
community, it is a strong market of phosphine releasing fumigants and Agroza holds the largest market share in this business. This target was certainly reached by the long lasting experience of Dr. Zaracovitis and his team. Agroza is also prepared to instruct and educate Pest Control Operators and members of staff of food industries in establishing sanitation programs as well as to supply suitable control products. (Stefan Brendle) The Practical Fumigator: Safety with the Basic Equipment for Fumigation Operators Most countries require that fumigations are only conducted by professional fumigators. These fumigators have to pass examinations approved by the authorities and will be certified as such. Phosphine fumigants are toxic pest control products; consequently there are laws which are restricting their application. Several rules must be followed when using the fumigants. For instance it requires that gas masks are on hand. Also, for a successful fumigation within the warehouse or under sheets it is absolutely necessary to measure the phosphine concentration during the fumigation. The licensed fumigator has a very responsible job to do and his check-list is quite long. In a so called Fumigation Management Plan all particulars are fixed which have to be carried out by the fumigation team. It begins with inspecting the commodity and the area to be fumigated and ends in releasing the structure to the public again after sufficient aeration. It goes without saying that for such an operation safety aspect comes first. That's why the BASIC EQUIPMENT FOR FUMIGATION OPERATORS offered by GmbH represents a valuable assistance in the fumigation work. In a handy pilote case you will receive: 1 Full Face Mask 2 Ph 3 filters 1 Gas tester 3 packages of Phosphine tubes at different measuring ranges 1 Work overall Work gloves Warning poster Note block with pencil Insect folder Magnifier, tweezers, tape for sealing It is our intention to call your attention to this practical equipment and we would be pleased if you would make multiple use of this special quotation. (Guenter Engel) The 9th International Working Conference on Stored Product Pests GmbH presented new fumigation techniques At the 9th IWCSPP in Campinas, Brazil, Dr. Stefan Schmitt gave an oral presentation to about 900 participants about the first Field Resistance Test Kit which enables the fumigators to TEST THE PEST within a few minutes and to adapt the fumigation conditions for a successful treatment. This new product distributed by the Detia Degesch Group is the first step to prevent Page 2
the spread and the development of phosphine resistance of stored product pests world-wide. The most important result of the plenary session Pest Resistance to Pesticides and Control Measures was that phosphine-tolerant beetles can still be treated successfully with phosphine by increasing the concentration and the exposure time. Additionally the Speedbox and the Degesch Phosphine Generator as well as a brief discussion of the environmental properties of phosphine were presented during the poster sessions. Full papers of all presentations are published in the proceedings of the conference and are available as pdf-files from the group on request. Also there was a conference booth set up by and Degesch Brazil which was visited throughout the conference by a lot of conference participants who received detailed answers to their manifold questions regarding all aspects of phosphine fumigations. Although many alternatives for fumigants were introduced it seems that phosphine respectively phosphide formulations are still the fumigants of choice. No other product than phosphine fulfils all requirements of a good pesticide against stored product pests: no influence on the treated product and the environment, good efficacy etc. (Dr. Stefan Schmitt) The Quality Management Part 1: Humidity-free production for safe high-quality-formulations All metal phosphide based formulations start a chemical reaction when they get in contact with humidity. Once this degassing process of the fumigants has started, it is very difficult to interrupt the decomposition of the active ingredient. Due to these properties of phosphides it is necessary to handle such sensible products in a special atmosphere. Detia Degesch fulfils these conditions at their production. Throughout the production process the active ingredient as well as all by-products are handled under defined conditions. This technique prevents the contact with humidity and therefore an early degassing. Furthermore the finished products are packed in gas tight flasks respectively aluminium bags. Thus, our customers can be sure to receive an effective and safe fumigant. (Dr. Stefan Schmitt) Page 3
The Most Important Pests on Stored Products Part 1: sitophilus granarius (Grain Weevil) The Grain Weevil and its stages of development (see illustration): 1: Adult beetle 2: Larva in grain kernel 3: Larva taken out of grain kernel 4: Pupa in grain kernel Appearance: The beetle is mm long, black-brown (red-brown shortly after hatching). The head ends in a slightly curved proboscis. The neck shield has despressed markings and is almost as long as the longitudinallygrooved wing covers. Life history: The female lays its eggs in a small hole made in the grain kernel and the larvae feed and pupate within it. Until the adult weevil bores its way out, infestation is not evident from the outside. The life cycle depends on temperature, taking about 113 days at C and about 42 days at 21 C. In temperate zones, the life cycle will take about 4 months, i.e., 2-3 generations a year. The weevils cannot fly. 2 4 Distribution: Worldwide; more important in temperate zones where it is one of the main stored grain pests. Damage: In temperate-zone countries the grain weevil is the most dangerous grain pest. The damage to wheat and rye is mainly done by the larvae; they also attack maize, barley, rice, buckwheat and oats. The beetles sometimes also eat flour, groats, pasta and millet. As with the Lesser Rice Weevil, mass infestation leads to hot spots, cacking and fungal infection. Damaged grain favours the development of secondary pests. Control: In mills, silos, warehouses, ships, barges, freight cars, and food processing plants with Phostoxin, Detia- Gas-Ex-Bags or Degesch Plates / Strips. More information on dosage and application of the product can be taken form the local label instructions. ( Manual of the Most Common Pests of Stored Products) The United Nations Project on Alternatives to Methyl Bromide Seminars in the Baltic countries GmbH was invited by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to participate in a seminar to alternatives to Methyl 3 1 Bromide in the Baltic countries, Poland and Bulgaria in September and October In these countries Methyl Bromide is still widely used for fumigating flour Page 4
mills and empty warehouses as well as for soil fumigation. One more workshop will be carried out in Latvia in Professional Fumigation Operators and people from the local authorities had the opportunity to follow the demonstration of the team how to use various fumigation devices in a proper and safe way: The Speedbox for small fumigations in stacks or containers, the Automatic Dispenser to distribute fumigants such as pellets and round tablets into silo bins, the Recirculation System (J-System), which will create a uniform hydrogen phosphide concentration throughout the grain Participants of the Lithuanian workshop storage and finally the Phosphine Generator for the rapid production and introduction of phosphine gas into the stored commodity. also showed various technologies for sealing the facilities and finally the participants were impressed with the demonstration of the Detia Degesch Phosphine Resistance Test Kit which is able to detect phosphine tolerant strains of insects within only 30 minutes. The technical equipment was sponsored by the UNDP and the workshops were supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). (Axel Hemptinne) The World Tobacco Exhibition and Conference in Bali / Indonesia participation in November 2006 DETIA DEGESCH participated in the Exhibition and Conference held in Nusa Dua - Bali/Indonesia from 8 to 10 November Following on from the success of the previous World Tobacco exhibition in Kunming/China in 2004 DETIA DEGESCH together with its Indonesian distributor PT. Berdikari Trading Division shared a booth at this important tobacco exhibition. The main focus was on the Magnesium Phosphide based Degesch Plate and Strip. Indonesia represents the most important markets in South East Asia. Within Indonesia alone more than 225 billion cigarettes are consumed anually, which Presentation of the Phosphine Resistance Test Kit in Poland relates to 53% of all consumption within the Asian region. Degesch Plate and Strip are the fumigant number 1 for leaf tobacco fumigation worldwide. CORESTA as well as leading international tobacco companies recommend and apply these unique and original fumigants made exclusively in Germany. In Indonesia important tobacco companies, such like Sampoerna, Djarum, Bentoel and others are faithful Page 5
clients of Degesch Plate and Strip. The exhibition attracted over 2,000 visitors from 47 different countries. More than 300 visitors from Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, South Korea China, Brazil, etc. were attended at DETIA DEGESCH`s booth. Fruitfull discussions with many of these visitors first of all on technical aspects proved the importance of 100% control of tobacco pests for the leaf tobacco industry. Fighting cigarette beetle Booth of Berdikari and Internal Data Personal: In July 2006 Mr. Stefan Brendle who has been working successfully in the national and international sales department of the Detia Degesch group since Hartmut Pfromm 1986 moved to the Detia Degesch Marketing department. His successor is Mr. Hartmut Pfromm. He is now responsible for the sales in the Western European countries except France. Imprint: Publisher: Editorship: GmbH Stefan Brendle Guenter Engel resistance to phosphine as well as adequate monitoring of pest infestations played important roles in the discussions too. Two business presentations on Tobacco fumigation with Degesch Plate and Strip by Mr. Joachim F. Jeltsch (Sales Manager East Asia/Latin America) completed the successful participation of in this international event. (Joachim F. Jeltsch) Technical disccussions of Mr. Jeltsch (right) with customers Registrations: By the end of the year received the Official Notice of Approval for the Degesch Magtoxin Granular which is being used in the Degesch Phosphine Generator. The Degesch Magtoxin Granular has been granted the same applications as for the Degesch Plates. The registration will be extended on the use on grain within soon.
