Economics of Prevention SOUTHEAST CENTER FOR AGRICULTURAL Online Farm Safety Economics Course & Curriculum Presented by: Dr. Joan Mazur and Rashawn Franklin
Purpose of the Workshop Instruct agricultural educators on the costs of farm injury and economic benefits of safety practice Demonstrate the use on simulations and Cost Tools for classroom use Demonstrate the use of an Immersive 3D game on risks and costs of ATV injury Provide innovative, online, free materials for agricultural educators for classroom use to promote a culture of safety in Ag. Education
Agricultural Injuries Cost Us All Agriculture ranks among the most hazardous jobs. Large portion of workforce often exposed to hazards is under age 20. Farm jobs have highest rate of fatalities and injuries of all types of teen employment. A child dies every three days from an agricultural-related incident in the U.S. (tractor overturns are a leading cause). For ATV riders helmets and proper sizing and supervision are low cost life savers.
Agricultural Injuries Cost Us All Besides losing family members and friends, there are economic and social losses to take into account. Every day about 167 agricultural workers suffer from lost work time due to injuries, many of which become permanent. These mishaps cost time and money, but the collateral damage here could impact hundreds of families.
Agricultural Injuries Cost Us All Head injuries are the leading cause of ATV-related deaths among children. Nearly 40 percent of teens frequently drive without a helmet. Of the 100,000 injuries incurred on an ATV in 2012, 25% were youth under the age of 16. Helmets may reduce risk of death by 42% and nonfatal injury by 64%. Estimated average cost per patient involved in ATV-related trauma = $19,671 20% of ATV-related emergency department visits & hospital admissions are paid by public funds In 2003, ATV-related deaths and associated economic costs accounted for $2.5 billion. The cost of a $55 helmet can avert millions of dollars in medical costs and lost wages. Average age of ATV- related mortality is 28 years, which represents 43.2 years of productive life lost.
