1 UN WORLD DATA FORUM Cape Town South Africa January, 2017 Follow-up and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean Institutional Architecture and National Statistical Capacities for the Production of the Sustainable Development Goals Indicators Pascual Gerstenfeld Statistics Division UN ECLAC

2 THE RELEVANCE OF THE REGIONAL DIMENSION The regional dimension benefits from the existence of intergovernmental forums and other regional integration bodies that provide the member States with forums in which to adopt regional positions and devise mandates - constant and direct contact with countries. Facilitates the linkage between the national work and the activities undertaken in the international arena through the representativeness and feedback between representatives and represented. Ensures sustainability in continuous improvement and strengthening of the NSS and the NSO as statistical governing bodies

3 THE ADDED VALUE OF THE REGIONAL DIMENSION Greater similarity among the national statistical systems (NSS) and common challenges faced by countries. Synergies to generate shared assessments of capabilities, needs and demands. Easier to move towards the implementation of standards and methodological developments. Greater mutual understanding among countries allowing a better coordination of horizontal cooperation. Better possibilities to promote regional and international cooperation with the respective agencies.
