Farm field-specific information is needed to better understand Ontario s crop production and farm environmental stewardship crop rotation patterns; crop selection responses to market drivers (ex. Winter Wheat planted in Fall 2007) tillage system practices in relation to soil erosion and runoff management crop-specific nutrient application distribution crop-specific pest-management practice distribution crop-specific water budget/management needs
15 Agricultural Resource Inventory (AgRI) What is OMAFRA s AgRI? Spatially-referenced database for farming practices and land management systems Geographic Information System (GIS) layers being developed for cropping systems and tillage practices Data collected through field observations; work is also underway to extract information from satellite imagery Data (called attributes) are assigned to polygons Polygons form a seamless digital framework of all landscape features, which include: farmstead, farm field, fencerow, roadway, ditch, and riparian and rough land areas

Hay system; etc) linked to polygons by ownership were not field-specific provide no tillage information were not continued; one-time complete coverage This database remained the best available information for 25 years!
17 Ontario AgRI Hertiage 1983 Agricultural Resource Inventory (AgRI) need for improvement and on-going information collection much more detailed field-specific information is required to understand: productivity and soil health rotations traceability, production value, local food, etc. source water protection run-off generation and movement soil erosion and phosphorus movement extent of farmers land management activities (ex. no-till, conventional tillage, cross-slope planting, cover crops, residue management, rotational grazing, etc.)
