2 Backgrund: The need The request fr a framewrk fr the disseminatin f gd agriculture related practices in wetlands was made by the Ramsar COP8 in Valencia Nvember 2002 thrugh the Reslutin VIII. 34 n: Agriculture, wetlands and water resurce management. Request t the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) Gd agriculture-related practice, site-specific and crp-specific infrmatin and plicies that demnstrate sustainable use f wetlands fr agriculture.

3 Target grup Guidance is needed at bth the plicy/planning level as well as at practical level. Cnnected t Ramsar Reslutin VIII.14. New Guidelines fr management planning fr Ramsar sites and ther wetlands. Guidance at the practical level shuld receive pririty: Develpers wrking with wetlands in basins; A wide range f ptential users frm natinal and prvincial gvernment fficers and wetland managers t Nn-Gvernmental Organizatins; specialised internatinal rganisatins; internatinal and reginal financial rganisatins and banks; large-scale cmmercial farmers. Stakehlders n the site level will be the direct beneficiaries. Mbilized fr carying ut the necessary case studies Additinal guidance at the plicy/planning level, specifically addressing water resurces allcatin with regard t agriculture and the envirnment.

6 Challenge examples - Sustaining integrity f the wetland under cnditins f increasingly mre intensive agriculture. - Rerganize agriculture t preserve wetland while keeping agricultural incmes at level.

7 Case Studies Wrk in five t ten sites/cuntries ensuring, cverage f different gegraphical and wetland-agriculture systems cntexts. The bjectives are twfld: - Cnduct actin-riented (pilt) research n establishing wise and multiple prductive use f wetland-agriculture systems; - Engage lcal stakehlders and natinal plicy makers in the design, develpment, and eventual implementatin f wise and multi-purpse wetland management practices and strategies. These pilt prjects will: - Cntribute t the knwledge and data-base f the clearing huse mechanism; Lead t the frmulatin and testing f wise and multiple use management plans and strategies fr wetland-agriculture systems, and the dcumentatin f their lessns; - Culminate int cuntry-wned prgramme prpsals fr the mainstreaming and up-scaling f wise and multiple use f wetland-agriculture plicies and strategies.

8 GAWI prject gal T prmte synergies between agriculture, wetlands and water resurces management thrugh the develpment and implementatin f guidance n the jint management f agricultural and wetland systems fr fd prductin, pverty reductin, livelihds supprt and envirnmental sustainability. The prject has three purpses: - Develp a supprting framewrk and assciated guidelines fr the sustainable management f different types f wetland-agriculture systems impacted by the full range f water resurces, agricultural and wetland plicies, systems, and practices; - Build capacity t implement the guidelines; - Prmte the use f the guidelines.

10 Institutinal cllabratin Fstering Expert Cnsultatin: The prject utputs include a Framewrk Dcument, Technical Reprt, Plicy Assessment and Psitin Paper, as well as the final Guidelines themselves. These utputs will be delivered thrugh a cmprehensive prcess f expert / practitiner cllabratin and cnsultatin with the aim f achieving a brad cnsent. Fstering Institutinal Cllabratin: The prject prvides fr three distinct mechanisms that are explicitly designed t fster a brad cllabratin amng partners perating in the field f the wise use and management f wetland-agriculture systems
