4 What can be expected from FAO? FAO is a neutral forum for debate. It provides a meeting place where nations can develop international policies, guidelines and conventions such as:
5 Conventions, Agreements, Policies and Guidelines Global Plan of Action for plant Genetic resources for food and agriculture Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources Implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible fisheries International Plant Protection Convention International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food & Agriculture
6 What can be expected from FAO? FAO is also a center of excellence in the fields of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, natural resources and economic and social development. It provides key data and statistics in the form of:
7 Flagship Publications The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) The State of the World's Forests (SOFO) The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO) The State of Food Insecurity in the World (SOFI) + Global reports on Livestock, soil, water, genetic resources, etc.
8 Databases FAO collects and disseminates important data through publicly accessible databases on hunger, nutrition, land, forests, water, etc.
9 Food Price Index The monthly Food Price Index informs about global price developments and is regularly updated.
10 Regular reports Reports like the Food Outlook and country reports are regularly issued to inform about the global and national food security situation in many poor countries. Also Food Security assessment mission reports on hot spots like South Sudan, Somalia, North Korea, etc. GIEWS: Global Information and Early Warning System
11 Emergencies Countries in crisis Many countries around the globe are hit by natural disasters and calamities, conflicts, etc. FAO is providing emergency assistance to these food insecurity hot spots and assisting them to build up resilience against future shocks. FAO emergency teams are on the field working closely with the most affected populations and are also regularly issuing updates about their work.
