8 the key numbers of the agricultural sector in Africa agriculture covers on average: 60% of the jobs, 45% of the areas, and 13% of the GDP (50% in some countries) in Sub-Saharan Africa FAO, World Bank, 2013 agriculture is the main source of revenues for 60% of the agricultural population World Bank 2013 in order to improve agriculture in the developing countries, it is necessary to: increase productivity modernize the value chain promote the local demand FAO, World Bank, 2013 the agricultural market might reach 1000 billion dollars by 2030 whereas it currently represents 313 billion dollars World Bank million people suffer from hunger in Africa 86% of arable lands in Sub-Saharan Africa are not exploited World Bank
9 mobile agriculture is an opportunity in Africa to improve the value chain s productivity the connected agriculture represents : the ICT development in Africa is twice as fast as any other place in the world, especially for the mobile technologies: 60% of the African villages have been covered. 15 market prices information service did you know that? «Labaroun Kassoua» is a service that gives to the rural world stakeholders the access to the information on the agricultural commodities prices and on the cattle prices on all the main markets in Niger by sending a SMS with the word «market» or «cattle» to the 139 phone number in French and in Haoussa - through USSD by dialing the #139# or through a voice call to 139 with an Orange mobile phone why use this service? to make the best choice of market for the products sale/purchase to optimize one s travels to the markets; one can decide to not use the transportation when the resale prices are low cost: 50 FCFA/ request: 20 FCFA/minute how does it work? SMS, interactive voice server, USSD, web back-office management tell me more commercial launch in Niger since 2011 with the RECA and the SIM B 15
