8 OBJECTIVES 1. Determine yield difference between wheat planted in 7.5 inch rows and 15 inch rows 2. Determine optimum seeding rate for 15 inch row wheat 3. Determine optimum seeding rate for doublecrop soybean planted into 15 inch wheat stubble
9 ELEMENTS OF WHEAT YIELD Wheat yield based on # of heads area -1, # kernels head -1, and kernel weight Plant populations & row spacing that minimizes inter-row and intra-row competition will optimize yield by optimizing sunlight utilization (Joseph et al., 1985)
10 ELEMENTS OF WHEAT YIELD Many studies show row spacing narrower than 7.5 inch rows are optimum for maximizing yield. Frederick and Marshall, 1985 Joseph et al., 1985 Marshall and Ohm, 1987 Johnson et al., 1988 Little work has been done to document if a yield penalty exists for planting wheat in rows wider than 7.5 inches
11 ELEMENTS OF SOYBEAN YIELD Dry matter production is correlated to solar radiation interception by the crop canopy - Shibles and Weber, 1965 Maximum soybean yield requires canopy closure at beginning flower - Kane and Grabau, 1992 Maximum yield requires a leaf area index of 3.5 at R5 - Holshouser and Whittacker, 2002

30 RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: WHEAT ROW SPACING & POPULATION STUDY No difference in grain yield or moisture between 7.5 inch row and 15 inch row treatments 750,000 seed acre -1 treatment resulted in lower head count, but no difference in yield Ideal head count for maximum wheat yield is heads/ft 2 while adequate yields can be produced with a head count of 55 heads/ft 2 - Lee et al., 2009
31 RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: WHEAT ROW SPACING & POPULATION STUDY The optimum seeding rate to maximize yield could not be determined with this data set. Favorable weather conditions for fall growth, tiller development, and seed set resulted in high head counts and similar yields across all treatments.

33 RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: WHEAT ROW SPACING & POPULATION STUDY 1,250,000 seed acre -1 treatment provided the highest return on investment for wheat planted in 15 inch rows.

35 RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: DOUBLE-CROP SOYBEAN POPULATION STUDY As seeding rate increase, final stand increased Regression analysis indicates that a seeding rate of 200,000 seeds acre will achieve maximum yield Regression Equation Model Sig. 36 RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: DOUBLE-CROP SOYBEAN POPULATION STUDY Results from this study were similar to results found by Kratochvil et al.(2004) In both studies double-crop soybean was planted into the remaining stubble from that spring s wheat crop. Lee et al. (2008) achieved optimum yield with lower seeding rates Soybeans in that study were planted into stubble that lay fallow for 11 months.

38 CONCLUSIONS There was no significant difference in grain yield between 7.5 inch and 15 inch row wheat. The optimum seeding rate to maximize grain yield in 15 inch row wheat could not be determined since there was no difference in yield for the treatments tested. Economic analysis indicates that the 1,250,000 seed acre -1 treatment provided the highest return on investment.
39 CONCLUSIONS The optimum seeding rate to maximize yield for 15 inch row double-crop soybean was 200,000 seeds acre -1 when planting into 15 inch wheat stubble. Economic analysis indicates that the 180,000 seed acre -1 treatment provided the highest return on investment.
