NEW ZEALAND IS OUR HOME. IT IS A LAND LIKE NO OTHER. A LAND OF NATURAL ABUNDANCE AND BEAUTY. NOVEMBER
OUR PASSION FOR THIS PLACE RUNS DEEP IN OUR ROOTS. WE ARE PROUD TO BE ITS GUARDIANS. 2 3
New Zealand. Our unique land. New Zealand is an isolated oasis of natural beauty 2,000 kilometres from our nearest neighbour. With a temperate climate and an abundance of water and clean air, everything flourishes here. New Zealand lies on the southern edge of the world, between the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. It is an incredibly remote place and this remoteness has helped protect and preserve our natural environment for thousands of years. This land is made up of two major islands, covered in dense forests, rolling green grasslands and magnificent mountain ranges. Our unique place in the world gives us regular, pure rainfall as well as plentiful sunshine hours. This is what makes New Zealand an ideal place to grow grass. Pastures flourish in our fertile soil and temperate climate. Rich grass grows thick and almost unimaginably green. We are lucky to call this land our home, and we are proud to protect its natural beauty for future generations. 4 5
EXPERTISE NZMP has deep dairy expertise and a close relationship with the land. This is the story of how we capture the best of New Zealand s natural goodness and share it with the world. 6 7
Our farming expertise. Our farmers have generations of experience in dairy farming. For over a century, they have been learning from those who have farmed before them. Today, 10,500 New Zealand farmers co operatively own Fonterra. They have a deep understanding of this land, and they know how to unlock its natural goodness. Farming is in their blood. It s their passion and where they focus their integrity. Our New Zealand farmers care deeply about the quality of their grass, the wellbeing of their cows, and the milk their cows produce. They are constantly refining their pasture-based farming philosophy to be the very best in the world. By embracing new ideas and advances in technology, our farmers continue to raise the standard of New Zealand dairy. This combination of experience, expertise and forward-thinking is why New Zealand farmers are world-leaders at growing grass and farming on it. They have set excellent standards in dairy quality, safety and care. They know how to make high quality milk, and we work together to deliver this to people all over the world. 8 9
Our grass. Grass is a natural food source for cows and New Zealand is an ideal place to grow it. We enjoy at least 2,000 hours of sunlight annually, along with excellent rainfall, moderate temperatures and fertile soil. Grass flourishes here, and our cows produce delicious, nutritious milk. IN HARMONY WITH NATURE New Zealand pasture-based farming follows the seasonal patterns of our unique environment. Our cows begin producing milk through the southern hemisphere s spring, when the sun begins to bathe the land and grass growth increases. Milk and grass production peaks in October. EXCELLENT NUTRITION Milk is a rich natural food source of bio-available calcium. Milk also contributes many other essential nutrients including high quality protein, vitamin A riboflavin and vitamin B12. GROWTH AND INNOVATION We know the importance of good grass. As a country, we ve invested years of research into improving grass quality and propagation. The New Zealand dairy industry and the Fonterra Farm Source team support farmers in effective grass management
Our farming practices. ANIMAL WELFARE In New Zealand, we re internationally recognised for our high standards of animal welfare. The global Animal Protection Index ranks us equal first place for animal welfare standards. That s because our farmers care about their animals, and we work together to make sure we uphold strict standards. The fact is, healthy and well-cared for cows produce high-quality milk. That s why we focus on growing excellent grass and using farming practices that keep our cows healthy and contented. rbst FREE DAIRY The New Zealand Government prohibits the use of animal growth hormones in dairy farming. Our farmers never use growth hormones (rbst) to increase milk production. EXPERTISE THROUGH EXPERIENCE AND INNOVATION Farming on pasture is how we ve always done it it s in our roots. New Zealand farmers have the deepest, most diverse set of pasturebased farming skills. But we re also forward-thinking. We re constantly refining our farming practices and embracing new ideas that will help us care for our cows and produce better dairy ingredients. AS NATURE INTENDED In New Zealand, we re commited to farming on grass, the way nature intended. Our cows are able to roam freely within the paddock and have the freedom to express natural behaviours. Annually, on average 85% of our cows diet is grass, and they spend 90% of their time on open pastures
Unmatched global reach. Every day, we capture the very best of New Zealand s natural goodness and share it with the world. We take care to preserve our promise of trusted goodness, every step of the way from our farms to you. NZMP is a part of the world s largest dairy exporter, Fonterra. We export New Zealand dairy ingredients to customers in over 140 countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. Our expertise in delivering this dairy goodness is second to none. We have strong visibility and control through our supply chain. Our Fonterra Safety and Quality System ensures that wherever we re located in the world, we have a clear, consistent framework to deliver quality ingredients and services. Our ingredients have tamper-evident packaging and traceability features, and we employ strict quality controls every step of the way from us to you. It s all part of our commitment to food safety, consumer health, and consumer satisfaction ensuring we bring you the very best of New Zealand dairy. While most of our dairy is from New Zealand, a small percentage of our dairy ingredients use milk from around the world. We uphold the same high standards with these ingredients as we do with our New Zealand dairy. We conduct milk quality audits and improvement programmes across all 16 countries where we source milk. Our Fonterra Approved Supplier Programme ensures we operate a robust and safe approval process for procured ingredients, packaging and third party sourced dairy products
