3 A raising A is for ag. Ag is short for agriculture. Agriculture is cultivating soil, producing crops and livestock. A is for acre. An acre is about the size of a football field. The average farm in Oklahoma is about 420 acres. 1
4 B Beef, it s what s for dinner. Beef has ZIP Zinc, Iron, Protein. 2
5 C Cotton is the fabric of our lives. Your blue jeans and t-shirts are made from cotton fibers. Cotton fibers grow on the seed of the cotton plant. 3
6 D herd D is for dog. Some dogs help sheep ranchers and protect their sheep. 4
7 E E is for edge. Fences are on the edge of the farmer s field. The edge is the boundary of the farm. E is for equipment. Farmers use different equipment for different purposes. Wheat farmers use combines, but hay farmers use balers. 5
8 F F is for forestry. The southeast corner of Oklahoma has many forests. A variety of trees grow in Oklahoma s forests. You can count the rings to find out how old a tree is. 6
9 G is for goats. GGoats are curious about their environment and like to eat everything they see. They eat hay, trees, and even thorny blackberry bushes. 7
10 H help H is for horses. Horses are fun. In Oklahoma, we have race horses. Some horses ranchers herd their cattle. 8
11 I I is for itch. Hay makes the farmer itch when it gets on his skin. I is for ice cream. Ice cream is a delicious treat made from milk. 9
12 J J is for jelly. In Oklahoma we grow peaches, grapes, apples, strawberries and plums to make jelly. 10
13 K meat? K is for kabob. Have you ever eaten a kabob grilled in the backyard with vegetables and Yum - Yum!! 11
14 L L is for legume. Legumes are good for the soil and good for you. Soybeans, peanuts and green beans are legumes. You eat the seed of a legume. soybeans green beans peanuts 12
15 M is for milk. It makes a body grow. We get whipping cream, butter and cheese Mfrom milk. 13
16 N N is for nuts. The most common nut grown in Oklahoma is the pecan. Native pecans are very little, but quite tasty. Papershell pecans are larger, taste good and are easier to shell. 14
17 O O is for oxen. Before farmers had tractors, oxen pulled plows to help them grow crops. O is for Oklahoma, the Sooner State. 20 R R is for rain. Rain waters the crops that grow in Oklahoma. 18
21 S S is for soybeans. Soybeans are used for livestock feed, for human food, and soybean oil. Soybean oil is made into ink, paint and even crayons. 19
22 T Farmers T is for tools. use many tools and machines to help them grow crops. They use tractors, plows and sprayers to make their work easier. 20
23 U U is for underground. Many vegetables and legumes grow underground. Favorites include potatoes, carrots, and peanuts. U is for university. Oklahoma State University and Langston University are land grant colleges. They help farmers and ranchers do their jobs better! 24 V A V is for veterinarian. veterinarian is an animal doctor. 22
25 W W is for wool. Farmers shear sheep for their wool. Wool is then made into clothes, hats, and blankets. 23
26 X X is for box. Farmers put fresh produce in a box. The boxes are shipped to grocery stores so customers can buy fresh fruits and vegetables to eat. Draw your favorite farm fresh fruit and vegetables in the box. 24
27 Y Y is for yam. In the United States, a yam is called a sweet potato. Sweet potatoes grow well in sandy soil. Does your family eat sweet potatoes at your Thanksgiving dinner? Y AM S 25
28 Z Z is for zucchini. A zucchini is a vegetable and is a kind of squash. It is green and tastes very good raw or cooked. Zucchini grows very well in Oklahoma gardens. 26
29 /ch/ is for cheese. Cheese is a delicious dairy product made from milk. Yogurt, sour cream, butter, and ice cream are other dairy products. The calcium in dairy products help make strong bones. 27
30 /sh/ is for sheep. Some sheep have wool. Some sheep have hair. Some sheep have both wool and hair. 28
31 /wh/ is for wheat. Hard red winter wheat makes delicious bread. 29
32 /th/ /th/ is for leather. is for thorn. Blackberries and raspberries are fruit that grow on brambles. Sometimes these plants have thorns. Be careful if you are picking these nutritious fruits. You could wear leather gloves to protect your hands. 30
33 /ph/ is for photosynthesis. Plants make their own food whenever they need it. They use sunlight to help them grow. The process is called photosynthesis. 31
34 /ng/ is for spring. Spring is a busy time on the farm. Baby animals are born and many crops are planted. 32
