1 HUNGARY IN THE WORLD AND IN THE EU (2015, source: FAO and Eurostat) As a landlocked country, Hungary has no fisheries, but is the EU s 12 th largest producer of aquaculture products. 2 AQUACULTURE Aquaculture refers to the farming of aquatic (freshwater or saltwater) organisms, such as fish, molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic plants. Aquaculture data are reported in live weight equivalent and value. As Hungary is landlocked, farmed fish production is entirely from freshwater. In 2015, 82% of the volume was produced in ponds, while 17% was produced in tanks and raceways. 29,6 30,4 26,5 27,2 30,3 29,9 26,1 30,3 30,6 15,9 15,0 14,2 13,6 15,5 14,6 14,9 15,4 17, Main commercial species farmed and % over total (2015, million euro and tonnes) CARP FRESHWATER CATFISH OTHER FRESHWATER FISH OTHERS 22 70% 13 78% CARP 6 20% 3 17% FRESHWATER CATFISH 2,5 8% 1 4% OTHER FRESHWATER FISH 0,5 2% 0,1 1% OTHERS (source: EUROSTAT)
3 WHOLESALE (sources: Research Institute of Agriculture Economics) Wholesale is an intermediary stage in the distribution channel that buys in bulk and sells to resellers (e.g. retailers) rather than to consumers. In Hungary there is no clearly identifiable wholesale stage. A considerable part of the production is sold from aquaculture farms directly to the retailers or to angling associations. The largest producers have contracts with retail chains. Usually, minor producers sell their harvested quantities to larger producers. PROCESSING According to Eurostat-SBS, 7 persons were employed in Hungary in the fish processing industry in In 2016, the main products sold were preserved or prepared crustaceans and molluscs and frozen fish meat (source: Eurostat-PRODCOM). 9 companies Sales: EUR 0,8 million (2015, source Eurostat - SBS)
