3 TBeef SimAngus composite bulls provide the hybrid vigor to increase your fertility and conception rates and pounds weaned per acre while maintaining the simplicity of a straightbred program. The AVERAGE TBeef Bull: 1. Produces females that are more profitable than 97% of the hybrids in the nation. 2. Produces feeder calves that are more profitable than 80% of the hybrids in the nation. 3. Sires calves that calve easier than 98% of the hybrids in the nation. 4. Sires calves that have more marbling than 90% of the hybrids in the nation. 4 TBeef Genetic Program All bulls have genomically-enhanced EPDs. All bulls were in the top 25% of the nation for profitability measured by the All Purpose Index (more info on the All Purpose Index is available at TBeef.com) at weaning time, or better. EPDs are enhanced or are being enhanced with birth weight data, calving ease data, weaning weight data, post weaning average daily gain data, yearling weight data, feed-intake data, carcass data, mature cow size data, fertility and longevity/stayability data, and docility data. Breeding and Marketing Philosophy: We recognize and utilize the substantial value of heterosis with regards to both maternal traits, such as fertility and longevity, and terminal traits, such as growth and vigor. We recognize and utilize breed complementarity of Angus and Simmental. Angus and Simmental both have large numbers of cattle in their breeds. Therefore, there are more cattle that are outliers, or well above the breed average. They both have strong, progressive breed organizations that are able to identify superior genetics. We recognize and utilize those genetics. We recognize and utilize one of the largest, most powerful genetic evaluations in the world, the International Cattle Evaluation produced by International Genetic Solutions. We harness the power of that evaluation through the utilization of EPD s and economic selection indexes. Visual appraisal is applied in a disciplined, strategic and applicable manner. Inidicator traits (traits that are used to predict profit-focused traits or economically relevant traits) such as udder appraisal, foot and leg appraisal, etc are evaluated in an effective manner through statistical analysis and proper genetic evaluation methodologies. Other economically important traits are hard if not impossible to visually appraise such as fertile longevity, marbling, etc. Selection pressure is often wasted focusing on improper visual appraisal, stunting genetic improvement. To measure these traits we use the proper tools such as actual phenotypes (carcass data, birth weights, weaning weight, etc.), DNA, etc. We recognize and utilize the value of economic selection indexes such as the American Simmental Association All Purpose Index and Terminal Index and the American Angus Association s $Beef Index. Economic selection indexes offer a disciplined, more accurate approach to putting selection pressure on all economically relevant traits, with the most economically relevant traits receiving the most selection pressure. The proper selection pressure is applied with market projections, produced by CattleFax and the USDA, and their associated traits. The API index is for cattle producers who keep their own replacement heifers, which most producers do, while marketing the remainder of their cattle into channels where they will end up in the meat production chain. Thus, growth and carcass traits are still very relevant in the API index. TBeef only markets bulls that are in the top 25% for API in the nation at weaning time (after EPDs on the bulls have been genomically enhanced). That said, EPD s are constantly changing as more data becomes available, so certain bulls may occasionally drop below the top 25% API mark at certain times in their lives. We also offer bulls that would work extremely well in a terminal program as TI and API are highly correlated. Learn more about API and TI at We recognize that if less emphasis is put on visual appraisal of bulls at the time of sale, i.e. fat bulls, bulls can be grown out to increase performance, fertility and longevity. We would prefer to grow the bulls out at our facilities until they are at least 15 months of age using development methodology that maximizes fertility and longevity. If a customer wants a bull before that time, we make every effort to make sure that the bull is developed properly and not used before he is 15 months old. 4

5 TBeef Health Program Bulls are up to date on vaccines for the following diseases: IBR, BVD (Type I and II), BRSV, PI3 Mannheimia haemolytica Pasteurella multocida Campylobacter fetus (vibriosis) Leptospirosis (5 strains) Clostridium 7way Haemophilus Somnus Hoofrot and liver abscesses Salmonella, E. Coli, and an aid to prevention of pinkeye (using EndovacBeef) In addition, the bulls have been treated for external parasites with an ivermectin pouron and for internal parasites with a paste dewormer. We also conduct Johnes surveillance on our herd, with none having been detected to date. All bulls have been lab tested to not be a persistently infected (PI) carrier of BVD. All bulls are virgin bulls with no chance of exposure to Trichomoniasis. If one of our herd bulls is being offered for sale which is not a virgin bull, it will have been tested for Trichomoniasis. All bulls will have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam before being delivered. All bulls will be 15 months of age before being delivered, or if the purchaser insists on receiving the bull sooner, we will strongly encourage that the bull not be used before he is 15 months old. 6 EPDs and Selection Indexes All Purpose Index (API): API is a bio-economic selection index that utilized CattleFax market projections, USDA beef production simulators and the International Cattle Evaluation with over 16 million cattle records to evaluate overall genetic profitability taking into account every economic facet of cattle production. Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and 5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. Genomically-Enhanced EPDs: All bulls offered on TBeef have genomically-enhanced EPDs. Genomic data is extremely valuable but is still of the utmost value when included with all other information in the EPDs. Therefore, to make the most powerful, most accurate genetic selection decisions with the use of genomic data, that genomic data must be included in the EPDs in the form of genoically-enhanced EPDs. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Calving Ease (CE): Percentage of unassisted births when used on heifers. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percentage of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Marbling (MRB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days. Average Daily Gain (ADG): Pounds gained on average per day post-weaning. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. Docility (DOC): Percentage of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile). Using API and TI First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit 6

7 Achieving Peak Performance/Profitability on Individual Traits When it comes to trait selection, EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) are the most powerful tools there are in genetic selection. There are some people that will argue this. Two of the most common arguments are that EPDs are just another tool in the toolbox. I do use them but I use them in conjunction with all the other information. Secondly, numbers are fine and dandy but we re breeding cattle for the real world and we need to know how they perform in the real world. Argument 1: EPDs are just another tool in the toolbox. I do use them but I use them in conjunction with all the other information. This argument is a derived from a basic misunderstanding of EPDs. The reason EPDs are not just another tool in the toolbox is because, in regards to individual traits, EPDs are the toolbox. The idea of using all the tools (that are valuable predictors, that is) that one can get their hands on (parental data, sibling data, actual performance data, progeny data, DNA data, ultrasound data, etc.) is the right idea. These are the tools in the toolbox. However, these tools must be evaluated and emphasized correctly. For example, a DNA test for marbling may have the same value as eight carcasses from progeny of that same animal. Would you therefore weight those two data points (carcass data on one animal and a DNA test) equally? How would you weight it? Can you evaluate that sitting in the stand at a bull sale or walking around the pens at a bull sale? The obvious answer is no. The good news is that EPDs do that for you. All data points are evaluated accurately and applied for you to maximize the effectiveness of you selection decision. So we must then ask the question, What happens if I use the EPDs along with other data presented in the bull sale catalog? The answer, as you can probably now guess, is that you will make a less accurate or poorer selection decision. For example, if you look at the calving ease EPD and the actual birth weight of that same animal and use the birth weight information, in addition to the calving ease EPD to effect your selection decision, you will have placed far too much emphasis on the actual birthweight and not near enough emphasis on the other tools in the tool box. Remember, the actual birthweight is already in the EPD so you ve basically analyzed it twice. In addition, you have effectively minimized the usefulness of such information as DNA data, parental data, progeny data, sibling data, ratios or contemporary data, etc because less overall weighting will be placed on that data. In order to be a peak performing animal breeder and achieve maximum genetic improvement, you must train your mind to exclusively look at the EPDs when it comes to trait selection. Argument 2: Numbers are fine and dandy but we re breeding cattle for the real world and we need to know how they perform in the real world. This argument has to do with the trust you place in your breeders commitment, ability, and honesty when it comes to collecting data. A good breeder should be collecting data in real-world scenarios. If your argument is numbers are fine and dandy but we need to know how cattle perform in the real world that would mean that you don t trust that your bull provider is collecting accurate, real-world data to put into the EPDs. If you don t trust that your bull provider is collecting accurate, real-world data and putting that data into a good genetic evaluation like the evaluation provided by International Genetic Solutions, the problem is not the EPDs, the problem is your bull provider. Therefore, the issue is not having to decide whether or not you trust the EPDs provided but having to decide whether or not you trust the bull producer collecting the data and providing the EPDs. Once you have a bull producer committed to data collection, the EPDs are as accurate, as powerful, and as real-world as anything out there. 7

8 Why Use API and TI to Maximize Genetic Improvement in Beef Cattle? Often times bull selection is taken way to lightly. If you think about the difference that a good bull can make in your bottom line, this decision should make you work a lot harder. The difference between a good bull and an average bull could mean$2,000/bull/year and $8,000 over the lifetime of that bull. The difference between a good bull and a bad bull could be double that. So what do you need to consider in order to make this decision? API and TI take real-world data and real-world performance of cattle and calculates how much more profitable one bull will be over another bull in your cowherd. You would have to properly analyze all of this data in your head if you chose to not use API and TI> API and TI performance are far better selection tools than eye appeal. We used to pick bulls based on eye appeal and that was a great method for its time. However, I often compare using eye appeal verses API and TI to trying to fight an F-16 fighter jet with a sword. The sword was a great weapon for its time but now we ve taken genetic improvement to a whole new level and you will quickly fall behind if you don t upgrade to the fighter jets of API and TI. 8
