1 2016/OFWG/015 Agenda Item: VII B Project Report (OFWG S): 2016 APEC Training Workshop on Coastal Eco-aquaculture Model for Sustaining Food Security Purpose: Information Submitted by: China 7 th Ocean and Fisheries Working Group Meeting Piura, Peru September 2016

2 Project Report (OFWG S): 2016 APEC Training Workshop on Coastal Eco-aquaculture Model for Sustaining Food Security APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center 1.Background Based on its dynamic performance over the last 30 years, and with fairly stable catches from capture fisheries, it is likely that the future growth of the fisheries sector will come mainly from aquaculture.(fao) Aquaculture also plays a role in food security through the significant production of some lowvalue freshwater species, which are mainly destined for domestic production, also through integrated farming.(fao) 1

3 1.Background Encourage the application of environmentally sound and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture technologies for reduction of nutrient pollution, and sustainable aquaculture to enhance food security.(aomm4, Xiamen Declaration) As the largest aquaculture producer, China puts a lot of efforts on the promotion of sustainable fishery and aquaculture. Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) is one of the coastal eco-aquaculture models to promote the sustainable and aquaculture. 2.Brief Introduction 2016 APEC Training Workshop on Coastal Eco-aquaculture Model for Sustaining Food Security was conducted on May 31- Jun 2, 2016 in Xiamen, China. With the support of Third Institute of Oceanography (TIO), the training workshop was conducted by APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center and co-hosted by Zhejiang Mariculture Research Institute. There are 7 APEC economies including Chile, China, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Thailand and Viet Nam sending the participants to the workshop and having the attendance from UNEP (Thailand), Bangladesh and Pakistan. (Please note that we have received the approval for these APEC Non-Members from APEC Secretariat on May 18, 2016). The training workshop mainly focused on: 1 Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA); 2 Diagnosis and Control of Disease in Aquaculture; 3 Information sharing about the aquaculture in APEC economies. 2

Output will release a summary report of 2016 APEC Training Workshop on Coastal Eco-aquaculture Model for Sustaining Food Security ; Benefit all the APEC members to develop sustainable management of marine resources to enhance food security; Improve sustainable aquaculture practices and implement ecosystem based management approaches to enhance food security; Actively conduct capacity building and sharing of best practices about aquaculture to improve the capability in contributing to food security. 7

9 6. Outcome Provide a platform for the experts of eco-aquaculture and participants from APEC economies to exchange the ideas about the eco-aquaculture to ensure food security; Share the theoretical and practical experience especially the best practice experience on how to design, implement and maintain a high-efficiency and ecological aquaculture model with the prestigious experts in relevant fields to sustain food security; Enhance the understanding of the role of responsible development of aquaculture to regional food security; Make recommendations to OFWG and other relevant APEC subfora collaboration to sustain food security in the region; Create cooperative opportunities in the field of fishery among APEC economies and APEC non-economies through the on-going capacity building so as to ensure food security. Thank you! 8
