2 GREENc COFFEE PRODUCTION IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS OF VIETNAM IS THREATENED BY THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE, WATER SHORTAGES & LOW FARMER INCOME.

3 Challenges to sustain productivity & improve co bean quality: Limited access to technical advice and training. Inadequate information on short-term and seasonal weather forecast. Increasing incidence of pests and diseases. Shortage of water and lack of water-reducing irrigation facilities and measures. Limited access to appropriate financial services. Farmers can be better informed: To deal with challenges in co bean production, like more variable weather, water shortages, soil fertility and pests and diseases. To apply practical Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) guidelines. Improve harvesting and processing (drying) methods. To meet international certification and sustainability criteria To meet requirements to qualify for microfinance loans. Lack of access to better (more demanding, higher value) markets: Not up-to-standard quality of co beans due to suboptimal cultivation and harvesting methods. Lack of market information (producing for high-end markets in Europe, USA and Asia). Underdeveloped relationships between value chain stakeholders: co farmers - national buyers and co companies - international roasters. Lack of easy-access, integrated and comprehensive information services to maintain and improve production, support access to high-end markets & manage environmental and climate change challenges: Farmers can make use of lowcost and focused information services for a wide range of productivity issues. Tailored information products for B2B partners in the co value chain across the Central Highland provinces.

4 ROBUSTA COFFEE PRODUCED IN VIETNAM S CENTRAL HIGHLANDS HAS BECOME A MAJOR EXPORT PRODUCT. IT PROVIDES INCOME TO 500,000 SMALLHOLDER FARMERS AND CATERS TO GLOBAL MARKETS. THE COFFEE SECTOR IS COMMITTED TO IMPROVING ECONOMIC VIABILITY AND ENVI- RONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY. GREENCOFFEE S GOAL IS TO PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY INFORMATION SERVICES TO FARMERS AND B2B PARTNERS IN VIETNAM BY USING SMART COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION TOOLS (SMARTPHONE, SMS, WEB PORTAL) THAT INTEGRATE IMPORTANT DATA AND GIVE FARMERS ACCESS TO RELEVANT INFORMATION PRODUCTS.

5 IN WE HAVE ESTABLISHED THE GREENco INFORMATION SERVICE - A MULTI-COM- PONENT (SMARTPHONE, SMS, WEB PORTAL), FARMER AND B2B ORIENTED INFORMATION SERVICE THAT WILL SUPPORT ROBUSTA COFFEE CULTIVATION IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLAND PROVINCES OF VIETNAM. GREENco WILL ENGAGE OVER 100,000 SMALLHOLDER FARMERS TO SUPPORT THEIR COFFEE CULTIVATION PRACTICES AND IMPROVE LIVELIHOODS. IT WILL ALSO PROVIDE (ON-REQUEST) TAILORED DATA ANALYSIS, INFORMATION PRODUCTS AND ADVICE THAT WILL SUPPORT B2B PART- NERS TO MEET ENVIRONMENTAL GUIDELINES AND SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION CRITERIA. DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE How can we create information services that... Support farmers with practical and relevant information? Increases farm productivity and income among Robusta co farmers? Improve access to high-end markets for co farmers, buyers and other enterprises in the co value chain? Contribute to sustainable and climate adaptive co cultivation that is recognized and appreciated in the value chain? Support Central Highland co sector businesses and institutions?

6 Developing innovative and field and farm data based information services for co cultivation: Information products based on complete geodata sets combined with farm properties and co cultivation practices. Information available to farmers at lowcost and using popular communication methods like smartphone, SMS, internet. Farmers can be engaged with tailored SMS support service, providing real-time data and advice. Using state-of-the-art geodata collection, integration and dissemination technology (smartphone, web data portal): Information services can be extended to B2B and institutional partners to address certification and/or sustainability issues. GREENco will provide a basis for improved value chain integration and more climate smart, sustainable and efficient production. Applying information and GAP advice to increase farm production and the income of co farmers: Applying Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) optimized for Central Highlands Robusta production by local experts and key farmers. Increasing knowledge for co cultivation with and for smallholder farmers. Following climate smart agriculture principles. Special attention for women and ethnic minority groups.

9 RELEVANT EXPERTISE SMARTseeds: INFORMATION SERVICES FOR VEGETABLE FARMERS ORGANIC NUTMEG HIGH PREMIUM RICE SMARTseeds is a partnership among 7 key stakeholders in Indonesia and the Netherlands. Development of innovative, geodata based information to increase production. Mobilized 3.2 million funding for the 3-year project ( ). 100,000 vegetable farmers in Indonesia will increase production by 10%. Facilitated partnership HCA/INA, Multi-Rempah, Agri Products to produce organic (aflatoxin-free) nutmeg, Indonesia and NL. Mobilized 420,000 to fund the project, 500,000 from Impact Investor to scale-up production. 80% increase in nutmeg price for 3,000 farmers in 1.5 years. Facilitated partnerships among 7 key stakeholders in the rice sector in Central Java, Indonesia. Mobilized 1.9 million to fund the project. Assisted 100,000 farmers to increase their production by 20% resulting in 40% increase in income.
