3 2013 Alumy Creek Angus Outcross Bull Sale elcome to our Annual on property Outcross Bull Sale. e feel this year s draft of 40 two year old bulls contains some of the best bulls we have bred to date. The bulls are consistent right across the draft displaying plenty of length, muscle and thickness. The Sires of the bulls this year are some of the best global genetics available. They offer significant genetic outcrosses for those breeders (like us) who are concerned at the narrowing of the Australian Angus genetic pool. They are all balanced EBV trait leaders within the Angus breed. Several bulls in our sale today represent some of the oldest sons available of these sires in Australia. Our aim is to produce calving ease Angus bulls that are long, heavy muscled and easy doing that will sire calves that weigh on the scales because that is what our customers are paid on. e select to breed Angus cattle that can produce a profit under commercial conditions. e also expect our bulls to have a good temperament and be easy to work with and our clients always comment on this. Because we retain the sisters to the bulls we sell, the mature cow size of our cattle must be sustainable in our harsh grazing environment. e also apply stiff selection pressure for fertility and our heifers must calve as 2 year olds unassisted and must continue to go back in calf quickly to produce a calf each and every year. The cows that go in calf early and quickly have the oldest heaviest calf when it comes to weaning and kilos are what the industry pays for. e breed for balanced performance, knowing cattle with good EBV figures can also have great structure and temperament. e don t select for single trait selection or just to add up the highest EBV numbers. Our selection for growth and carcase produces cattle that can achieve extra performance on grass in the paddock and with the potential to produce extra profits for you. The 2013 sale draft includes bulls by TC Aberdeen, SAV Pioneer, Sydgen CC&7, Mohnen Dynamite, Connealy Impression, Connealy Thunder and homebred Alumy Creek Neutron E12 from our top performing Alumy Creek Cow families. Outcross genetics sire TC Aberdeen leads the draft with 11 sons. Last year we said we thought that Aberdeen was a real game changer sire in the breed. Plenty of others also thought so and his progeny certainly became very sought after as the year went on. Aberdeen offers curve bending EBVs with terrific calving ease, low birth wt and maternal traits with top growth and carcase. He is a trait leader for short ation Length, Growth, ase t, Eye Muscle Area and with across the breed performance of top 10% or better for 13 traits. He sired Brisbane Royal Show winning females in 2011 and 2012 for us. Last year Aberdeen sons sold to a new Australian Angus Bull record price of $110,000 for KO Godfather in August As no more Aberdeen semen will come into the country the Aberdeen semen sold for $500 per straw as other Aust. & NZ studs tried to get some Aberdeen action. 4 SAV Pioneer delivers powerful performance and phenotype. Our Pioneer sale bulls are outstanding thick, long, moderate framed, easy doing cattle. They are deep bodied, with a smooth even muscle pattern, excellent carcase data plus a great temperament. Pioneer is a trait leader for short gestation length and growth with across the breed performance of top 10% or better in 15 Traits. Australian bred Pioneer bulls sold last year to a top of $32,000 for aitara Pio eral paid by Herb Duddy Sara Park. He has 7 bulls in the draft and is the sire of Lots 3, 4, 17, 19, 20, 23 and 36. Sydgen CC&7 combines Docility (#1 USA) with terrific calving ease, growth and carcase in a smooth package. His sons include popular AI sire Hoover Dam and his daughters are excellent production females. He adds growth, length, heavy muscling and excellent temperament in powerful commercially orientated sons. CC&7 is a trait leader for Growth and Eye Muscle Area and ranks in the top 10% or better across the breed for 11 traits. He has 8 bulls in the draft and is the sire of Lots 2, 5, 12, 21, 27, 24, 33 and 39. Mohnen Dynamite continues to impress as outcross genetics with phenotype and style. He has great commercial appeal with added length and weight. His sons were headliners at studs around the country including Dulverton, Rennylea, Texas and Booroomooka and have been sale toppers for us. His daughters are producing well. Dynamite continues to be a trait leader for short ation Length, Growth and ase eight. He ranks top 5% or better across the breed for 6 traits. Clients report that their Dynamite weaners were standouts in Connealy Impression is a new sire we liked so much we have used for 3 seasons. He has really excelled with calving ease, growth and eye catching appeal. Impressions are focused on the commercial traits- they are born easily, grow quickly and weigh heavy. His heifers are deep bodied standouts. In the US, Impression ranks highly (top 5%) for Tenderness, ADG and Feed Efficiency and perform well on grass. His progeny are long, larger framed, well muscled bulls. Get in early with some of the oldest sons in Australia for some real performance genetics with a proven pedigree and calving ease. Impression is already a trait leader for Growth and ase eight and ranks top 5% or better performance across the breed for 10 traits. His is sire of Lots 10, 13, 18 and 22. Connealy Thunder adds grunt with carcase muscle combined with super low birth weight and calving ease. His sons are great for heifers and his daughters are standout performers in the paddock. Those that bought Thunder bulls at previous sales just love them. He is a trait leader for short ation Length and Eye Muscle Area and top 10% or better for 8 traits. He is the sire of Lot 11. Alumy Creek Neutron E12 our homebred sire combines the growth of Neutron with the maternal traits of Booroomooka Theo. He has produced some very attractive well muscled sons for us and ranks in the top 1% for Fertility traits. His is the sire of Lots 31, 34 and 35. 5 Preamble SALE DATE AND PRIOR INSPECTION TIME: The sale will commence at 1pm on Saturday, 1st June Undercover shelter is provided. The cattle can be inspected on Saturday and Sunday 25th and 26th May am-2pm, and from 10am on the morning of the sale. Inspection at other times may be made by appointment with the agents or vendors. Complimentary lunch will be available on sale day. Light refreshments will be provided at the presale inspection. SELLING SYSTEM: Sale of animals will be conducted under normal auction terms and conditions. Please check with the Selling Agents to obtain a buyer s number if you are considering making a purchase. Please supply your PIC to the Agents. Successful purchasers are requested to give written advice to the Selling Agents, regarding transport arrangements, at the conclusion of the sale. All animals are sold exclusive of GST. INSURAN: Is available from the agents on the day. e recommend you take insurance out on your purchases. DIRECTIONS: Coldawinda is located 4kms south east of Tenterfield on Scrub Road. hen in Tenterfield, turn East off the New England Hwy at Clifton Street, on the Southern End of town (at Hilliers Nissan Car Dealers). Travel 1 block then turn right at the T intersection onto Scrub Road and travel 4kms on bitumen to Coldawinda on your Right. HERD HEALTH: All sale bulls have been tested negative PI (Persistently Infected) and have been vaccinated annually against Pestivirus with Pestigard vaccine. All sale bulls have been vaccinated with 7 in 1 (for Clostridial and Lepto), Vibrio and 3 Day Sickness vaccine. e recommend annual boosters. Johnes Disease: Alumy Creek Angus bulls are eligible to enter all areas. (Crossing Papers required for Qld.)Cattle Tick: Alumy Creek Angus is located in a tick free area. MANAGEMENT: Alumy Creek sale bulls are all quiet, well mannered cattle and are used to being handled on foot, with ATV Bikes and vehicles. They are used to being worked by dogs. All Alumy Creek sale bulls carry a freeze brand for easy identification in the paddock. They are rigorously screened for temperament. However this is no guarantee they will not misbehave under the pressure of sale day. FERTILITY: All bulls have passed a physical examination and microscopic crush side semen test. GUARANTEE: All bulls are sold with a 6 month guarantee as a calf getter. The guarantee is valid for a period of 6 months from the date of sale. The vendor must receive written notification together with a certificate from a registered veterinarian stating the nature of the infertility before the expiration of that period. Animals injured or lost as a result of accident, negligence or any disease, are not covered by this guarantee. Vendor liability relating to fertility claims will not exceed the purchase price of the animal and are limited to a credit equal to the purchase price less the salvage value which may be utilized to purchase a suitable replacement from a future Alumy Creek sale. RESSIVE GENETIC CONDITIONS: The DNA test status of all sale bulls for Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) and Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH)is shown at the top Right corner of each Lot. Please use this to assess bull suitability to your breeding program. All the bulls in the sale are free by test or pedigree of the potentially lethal and therefore potentially economically impacting recessive genetic conditions AM and NH with the exception of Lots 10, 43 and 45. Lot 10 is an AM carrier and free of NH. Lots 43 and 45 are NH carriers and free of AM. Carrier bulls are not recommended for use in Angus herds as approximately 12% of Australian Angus cows also carry these defects. There is a possibility that 1 in 4 offspring of those 12 % of cows might be affected if mated to carrier bulls. Carrier bulls are suitable for cross breeding or terminal programs or where the status is known of the cow herd. HEALTH AND SAFETY OF VISITORS: Visitors enter the pens of their own risk. Dogs are strictly not permitted at the venue. Children under 16 are requested not to enter the sale pens. All the bulls are known to be of good temperament under normal conditions. However sale day is not normal conditions. If you enter the pens, take note of your surrounds and be conscious of your safety. Do not crowd the bulls, or loiter in the pens. Please use common sense and be alert at all times. If you feel threatened whatsoever, please do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of yourself and others in the pen. Do not be alarmed, but it is critical that visitors pay attention to the risks associated with cattle and the day. 6 A brief description of EBVS and $Index Values The following is a brief description of Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs and Breedobject $Index Values and Accuracies. For a more detailed explanation of these please refer to the Angus Society of Australia web site ( Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN is an advanced genetic evaluation system that provides a genetic description of Angus cattle for a comprehensive range of traits influencing fertility, growth and carcase performance. It provides predictions of the genetic merit of individual animals called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). EBVs are based on all available pedigree and performance records provided by breeders in Australia and New Zealand, along with available overseas genetic information. EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait, and are shown as +ive or ive differences from the breed base. The average EBV for different traits changes over time as the breed makes genetic progress. The averages for calves born in 2011 are shown below. These averages provide a useful benchmark for comparisons of EBVs for individual animals. DOCILITY TRIAL ~ Docility EBVs are expressed as differences in the percentage of progeny that will be scored with acceptable temperament (ie. either docile or restless ). Higher, more positive, Docility EBVs are more favourable. For example, a bull with an EBV of +20 would be expected to on average produce 15% more progeny with acceptable temperament than a bull with an EBV of -10. Emphasis is placed on growth to days and high carcase yield while maintaining fertility and marbling. Steer ~ based on a self replacing herd that sells heavy grass fed steers for markets like the EU and light grass fed Jap Ox. Emphasis is on growth and carcase yield while maintaining fertility and marbling. inal ~ for herds where no animals are kept for breeding. For example using Angus bulls over dairy cross cows for vealer production or over tropical cows with steers and heifers grown out for short feeding.
