5 Philosophy of Agriculture Education I believe that educators assume the responsibility of preparing students to be successful in the future. Students must learn how to learn as they are gaining knowledge. Students cannot learn everything they will need to know in the future, so educators must prepare the students to teach themselves. As an educator, I equip my students with key life skills which they can utilize throughout their lives. These life skills include: acquiring knowledge, problem solving, decision making, communicating, evaluation, leadership, critical thinking, recordkeeping, interpersonal interaction, intrapersonal evaluation, taking personal responsibility, and creative thinking. In order to deliver class material and provide student with key life skills I utilize techniques highlighted by Barak Roseshine and Norma Furst in their article Research on Teacher Performance and Criteria. Rosenshine and Furst underscore several important characteristics of teaching which improve student achievement including: clarity, variability, enthusiasm, task-oriented behaviors, student opportunity to learn criterion material, use of student ideas and general indirectness, criticism, structuring comments, questioning, probing, and level of difficulty. From my experiences both as a student and a teacher, use of these teaching practices improves learning and retention of the material. Since life is dependent on agriculture, agricultural education is necessary in order to prepare future agriculturists. careers require knowledge, technical skill, and managerial ability. education programs are designed for students who plan to enter in to agricultural or technical college or employment requiring agricultural competency; however, the programs also develop important skills which are applicable to any desired career path. education adapts to address the practical needs of the students and the community as well as progressing with technology. I plan to instill within my students the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to succeed in life. I motivate my students at the beginning of every course, every unit, and every lesson. I find ways to relate each student to the information to be presented. Developing student interest and providing students with a felt need to know the information, creates a more enthusiastic learning atmosphere. Students work more diligently and retain the information better when they desire to learn the information. In order to best serve my students I incorporate a variety of teaching methods into my courses. This variability enables me to capitalize on the strengths of different students based upon their learning type. Each teaching method also provides benefits. Problem-solving lesson plans allow me to utilize students ideas and requires my students to think critically, acquire knowledge, and make decisions. Demonstrations and supervised practice allow students handson experience in a laboratory setting. The participation of the students increases their retention rates. Discussion lessons allow the students to contribute to the lesson and develop their communication skills. Illustrated lectures allow me to present more difficult information and associate the information to the student s previous experiences in order to help them better understand the material. I also utilize activities in which students work individually, with Philosophy of Agriculture Education

6 partners, and in groups. These activities allow students to develop intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. As an agricultural educator, I believe that the classroom and laboratory only contribute to one-third of the agricultural education program. FFA provides students with another component of the program. Students not only belong to an organization, but also develop their leadership, citizenship, and interpersonal skills through this reality laboratory experience. The final component of the agricultural education program is the supervised agricultural experience (SAE). SAEs provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skill to areas of their own interest. The SAE is the ultimate laboratory setting. With guidance from agricultural teachers and sometimes parents or employers, students develop technical skills and self-confidence. They encounter situations in which they must utilize their knowledge and life skills in order to succeed. Students also develop a strong work ethic as well as recordkeeping, managerial, evaluation, and financial skills. The SAE joined with FFA and classroom and laboratory experiences complete the total high school agricultural education program. As an agricultural educator I also believe in providing adult education to the community. Since agriculture is constantly changing with technological developments, agriculturists require continual training. I must cooperate with the extension service to provide further training to current agriculturists in the community. As I continue in this field, I will continue to utilize the classroom and laboratory, FFA, and supervised agricultural experience to develop future leaders and agriculturists. Through continued education, planning, evaluation, revision, and innovation I will continue to improve my agricultural education program to meet the needs of the students and community. Most importantly I will equip my students will the tools they need in order to be successful in the future. Philosophy of Agriculture Education 6

7 Departmental Objectives Primary Objective: Upon completion of the high school agriculture program, the student will have earned, saved, and invested enough money and will have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enter and succeed in: agripreneurship, employment which requires agricultural knowledge and skill, and/or agricultural college or technical school. Secondary Objectives: 1. One-hundred percent of the students have and maintain records for an SAE. 2. Have five students submit applications for state proficiency awards.. Have one student run for state officer.. Have one hundred percent of first year students qualify for their Greenhand Degree.. Have ninety percent of second year students qualify for Chapter Degree. Departmental Objectives 7

8 Program Description is located in the town of Hundred, Wetzel County, West Virginia. Hundred is a small, rural community with a population of residents. All farms in the area our part-time farms. Approximately half of the agriculture students have experience from a small, part-time farm. The other half of the agriculture students live in town. Most of the residents commute to Morgantown and Pittsburg to work or work in oil, gas, and coal in nearby towns. There are seventeen teachers working at and one principal Mr. Snyder. Approximately 10 students in grades 9-12 attend. Of those students, 100 of them are in the single-teacher agriculture program. These students are enrolled in a variety of agricultural classes, including: Agriculture and Natural Resources 1, Agriculture and Natural Resources 2, Agriscience 11, Agriscience 12, Ag Mechanics 1, Ag Mechanics 2, Food Science and Processing, Computers in Agriculture, Wildlife Management, Aquaculture, Forestry 1, and Horticulture. The program makes money through their meats lab in the fall and the greenhouse in the spring. The students butcher deer during hunting season. The plants that are grown in the greenhouse are sold each spring and bring in around 20,000 dollars. There are five FFA meetings that occur throughout the year during the school day. In October they have their Greenhand Ceremony and work on the Program of Activities. They have another meeting in December followed by the Chapter FFA Degree Ceremony in February. There is another meeting in March and the Chapter Banquet in May or June. One hundred percent of the students enrolled in the agriculture program are members of the FFA. Of those members 88% have an SAE. Some of the SAEs include: ham and bacon hogs, show hogs, beef cattle, sheep, garden crops, greenhouse placement, meats lab placement, and firewood. The agriculture students also work in the co-op garden. Program Description 8
