NZPork Guide: Outdoor Pigs in OVERSEER This guidance has been developed for nutrient budget advisors that provide support outdoor pork producers and their consultants using the online version of OVERSEER. This guidance includes a number of screenshots. Text size can be increased on the images by using the zoom function of the pdf reader programme. Any producers reading this guidance and requiring assistance can contact the NZ Pork Office (Phone: or environment@pork.co.nz). NZ Pork holds a list of nutrient budget advisors who have received training in the outdoor pig requirements of OVERSEER and complete an outdoor pig nutrient budget. Important note: this guide replaces the NZPork_PIGSEER_guidance_v1.3_Feb_2017.pdf which was developed when Outdoor Pigs was a standalone module of OVERSEER. The OVERSEER programme provides help text on each input screen. 1. ACCESSING OVERSEER OVERSEER is available at The user is required to create an account and generate a user name and login. 2. OVERSEER INPUT STANDARDS OVERSEER publish the OVERSEER BEST PRACTICE DATA INPUT STANDARDS. The input standards provide users guidance for data inputs that consistently achieve the most meaningful results. The content in this guide has been written on the assumption that the user is familiar with the input standards. Only pig specific input requirements are covered in this guide. 3. IMPORTING AN EXISTING OUTDOOR PIG NUTRIENT BUDGET There is a function in OVERSEER to import farm from file. This option will allow users to import an outdoor pig nutrient budget completed in the standalone outdoor pig module which was used until 1 P a g e

December However, if there are other types of block types (e.g. pastoral, cut and carry etc.) then the outdoor pig block data will need to be manually entered to create one nutrient budget that incorporates outdoor pigs. 4. FARM SCENARIO- BLOCKS To add an outdoor block to the nutrient budget, select Outdoor pig from the block name drop down list. There may be more than one outdoor pig block created e.g. breeding herd and a grower herd. Input the effective area (ha) for the outdoor pig block(s). 2 P a g e

5. FARM SCENARIO- ENTERPRISES (STOCK) To add outdoor pigs as an enterprise (stock) then the Outdoor pigs option is to be selected on the list of stock types. If there is a grow-out unit only (no sows) then this should be selected. 6. FARM SCENARIO- ANIMAL DISTRIBUTION There is only one option applicable for outdoor pigs and that is Relative yield (from soil, fertiliser inputs). Select this option from the drop-down list. 3 P a g e

7. ENTERPRISES- OUTDOOR PIGS- NUMBERS Enter key information for sows, boars, unmated gilts, and outdoor growers and finishers Sows: Boars: The sow herd is designated as the number of sows and mated gilts, carcass weight of choppers(cull breeding stock), replacement rate for both males and females, litters per sow/year, average numbers of piglets weaned per litter, weaning age in days, and weaning live weight. number of boars, Unmated gilts (replacements): number of unmated gilts (on hand) or days spent growing gilts from selection or arrival on farm. Outdoor growers and finishers: weaners added to outdoor blocks per month (number weaned from breeding farm per week and/or number purchased and brought in per week). 4 P a g e

8. ENTERPRISES- OUTDOOR PIGS- HOUSING There are two options for pig housing in OVERSEER: 1) Farrowing villages- which have an effluent management system 2) Sheds or barns- which have either bedding material or an effluent management system. Note: a hut on a paddock is not a shed or barn. If farrowing villages are used then the sows placed in farrowing villages option should be selected. Enter the time in days that the sows spend in the village pre and post farrowing. 5 P a g e

If pigs are placed in shed or barns then the relevant row(s) in the Pigs placed in sheds or barns table is to be completed. The data required is % of pig days per month (pigs placed in sheds or barns). This data is needed for each month and split into each class of pig: sows mating, sows gestation, sows lactating, unmated gilts, growers. Pig housing can be and is used as a mitigation method when the stocking rate is too high. For example, the nitrogen load could be reduced by putting pigs in a shed and exporting their nutrients. 9. ENTERPRISES- OUTDOOR PIGS- HOUSING EFFLUENT This screen is to be completed if there is pig housing (villages, sheds or barns). Choose an effluent management system from the drop-down list: 2 pond + discharge Spray from sump Holding pump- spray regularly Holding pump- stir & spray regularly Holding pump- spraying infrequently All exported (this is the usual option) 6 P a g e

If bedding material is used in barns then this option should be selected. A bedding management method will then be selected. 7 P a g e

Note: if the spent bedding (compost) or effluent from housing is spread on other blocks on the farm then these blocks will be receiving this as a fertiliser input in OVERSEER. This is dealt with in the fertiliser screen of the particular block(s) receiving the fertiliser. There is an option to add organic material specify the organic type as Piggery effluent. The inputs require nutrient testing data and volumes to be added as Nutrients (loading) in kg/month for N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na. 10. ENTERPRISES- OUTDOOR PIGS- FEEDING SYSTEM This screen requires a feeding method to be selected for each class of pig: The feed method and form is important as it affects the feed wastage and total feed used. dry-sows mating, dry sows-gestating, lactating sows, replacements (gilts and boars), growers and finishers (if this has been selected in the Enterprise screen). Choose the feeding method from the drop-down menu. The options include: on ground, on a feed pad, trough on pad, trough on paddock, 8 P a g e

ad lib feeder, liquid feeder, electronic sow feeder, feeding bails. Then state if the feed is in pellet form (or if not it assumes meal) and tick the box if no bird loss occurs. These are important because each feed type and feed system has a default feed wastage associated with it. As the model stands with the default feed levels, it assumes the wasted feed is added to sow intake so with less wastage the sow feed intake increases. The guidance notes suggest users manually input feed levels when a feed system changes. The same occurs when using pellets. 9 P a g e

11. ENTERPRISES- OUTDOOR PIGS- FEEDING AMOUNT This screen requires the feed amount to be entered for each class of pig. This is kg feed/animal/day. Feed for pigs (sows, gilts, boars, outdoor raised weaner) in villages or in barns or in stand off pads for part of the year must be included. There is an option to load default feed amounts which will populate the table with typical feed levels. Note: Adjustments in feed amounts need to be manually undertaken in the nutrient budget when there is a change to a more efficient (or inefficient) feeding method when default feed amounts are being used. Those producers using actual data should see a reduction in feed amount due to less feed wastage. When using default feed amount data use the table below to reduce the feed amount by the required percentage. Feeding Method Wastage Pellet % Bird loss pellets % Wastage meal % Bird loss meal % On the ground On a feed pad Trough on pad Trough on paddock Ad lib feeder Liquid feeding Electronic Sow Feeder Feeding bails P a g e

12. ENTERPRISES- OUTDOOR PIGS- FEED COMPOSITION Feed composition can be entered specific to the farm or there is the option load the default feed composition which are specifications for a typical well formulated commercial diet. The data required is for for creep, weaner, grower, finisher, gilt developer, sows general, sows late gestation and sows lactating feed. This information will be available from the farm nutritionist. The data and units needed if the farm specific data for diets used is: DM content g/kg Volatile solids g/kg ME content MJ ME/kg Crude protein g/kg Ileal digestible protein g/kg P g/kg Digestible P g/kg K g/kg S g/kg Ca g/kg Mg g/kg Na g/kg Cl g/kg 11 P a g e

13. ENTERPRISES- OUTDOOR PIGS- STRAW DISPOSAL In this screen data is inputed on the straw used per sow per year on the breeding unit. If farm specific data is not available there is a default of 140 kg/sow/year. Select a straw management option for spent bedding in breeding area from the drop-down menu: burnt, left in situ, spread on selected blocks, and other (exported). Select a composting method: no storage, covered (from rain), open (open to rain). Provide the time in storage in months. A second management option can be used for a portion of the straw. This option is required when for example, fire bans prevent the burning of straw in the summer. 12 P a g e

14. STRUCTURES- BLOCKS- YOUR OUTDOOR PIG BLOCK NAME- GENERAL The area allocated to each pig class within each block is to be entered. 13 P a g e

At least 1% must be in lanes and other areas. 15. STRUCTURES- BLOCKS- YOUR OUTDOOR PIG BLOCK NAME- GREEN COVER Enter the percentage (%) Green Cover for each of the above for Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Note: please contact the NZPork Office ((Phone: or if you require some further information to be sent to you on estimating % Green Cover on outdoor pig farms. 14 P a g e

16. FARM SCENARIO- SCENARIO REPORTS Generate a Full parameter report to obtain a complete list of the inputs entered into OVERSEER for the current nutrient budget. Compare this report to the raw data entered for outdoor pigs to identify any errors before finalising the nutrient budget. Complete a sense check of the nutrient budget by checking the Other Values report. In particular the Sow DM intake (tonnes/sow/year) should be within the range of 1.1 to 1.4. Remember this is dry matter per sow, as a check the dry matter will be 88-90% of the as fed feed quantity. The Sows per ha value should match the outdoor pig stocking rate for the farm. 17. CONTACT NZ PORK Any feedback regarding this guide or the outdoor pig functions in OVERSEER is welcome and can be sent to environment@pork.co.nz or by contacting the NZ Pork Office. 15 P a g e
