Ecotoxicology Laboratory Integrated in Departamento de Protecção das Plantas e de Fitoecologia (DPPF) Sustainable Use of Pesticides: Protection of Plants, Human Health, Natural Resources and dbi Biodiversity it Pesticide Risk Management through Decision-Making Support Tools

The Ecotoxicology Laboratory is comprised of two units: Unit I: Pesticide residues analysis Unit II: Toxic effects evaluation

Unit I: Pesticide Residues Analysis Evaluation of water exposure to pesticides with ihemphasis on priority i substances. Development of analytical methodologies for pesticides id with a high h potential ti to contaminate t the ecosystem Field Sampling Analysis

Pesticides routinely analysed by SPME / GC-MS alachlor atrazine desethylatrazine desisopropylatrazine i ethofumesate lindane metolaclor metribuzine cyanazine molinate chlorfenvinphos chlorpyrifos dichlobenil dimethoate oxadiazon pendimetalin pirimicarb prometryn propanil 3,4-dicloroaniline propazine simazine i terbuthylazine terbutryn trifluralin α-endosulfan β-endosulfan

Unit II: Toxic Effects Evaluation Daphnia magna Determination of toxic effects in: Water Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata Sediment / soil Heterocypris incongruens Determination of the EC50 for active ingredients and formulated products Field Sampling Biological Testing Effect Evaluation Formulated Product

AREAS OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Evaluation ation of the environmental impact of pesticides on water and soil in agricultural ecosystems, based on: 1. Modelling for prediction of: Fate and environmental behaviour of pesticides (multicompartment models, leaching indices) Potential ti risk of pesticides id (environmental indicators) based on their physicochemical properties and toxic effects on different organisms representative for environmental systems 2. Sampling of environmental matrices in the field

AREAS OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Development of Decision Support Systems through an adequate selection of pesticides and pollution risk mapping Probability of groundwater contamination by pesticides 0 25 % % % % By considering specific pesticide characteristics and local environmental conditions, this contributes to a support system for pesticide selection ensuring a sustainable use of pesticides
