4 Establishment Food Technology Center (FTC) was established by the Ministry of Industry in 2001, as a National Non-profit Organization to submit technical assistance to Food Processing Sector in Egypt. Food and Agro Industries Technology Center (FAITC) was established in 2013 as a result of the merge of both Food Technology Center (FTC) and Agro-Industries Technology Center (ATC), aiming to: Facilitate the provision of integrated technical solutions that respond to the needs of the Food/Agro Industries supply chain. Enhance value-addition. Support the development of this important sector.

5 FAITC vision is to become: Vision A leading center of excellence for the development of food industries and transform it to a knowledge-based industry. A leading Provider of Technology and Innovation services for a competitive Egyptian Food Industry. Anticipating technical needs of the food processing industry allover Egypt. 6 Mission & Role FAITC mission is to: Utilize resources to improve, modernize, develop and upgrade Egyptian Food Industries Sector by leading innovation and technological development, transferring technology and providing sustainable and integrated solutions to: Meet technological needs. 18 Objectives 1. Establishing / Updating database of dairy SME's of SFD beneficiaries. 2. Identifying technical needs for the Egyptian dairy SME's through diagnosis study. 3. Raising awareness through workshops. 4. Building workers capacity in the sector through on-job training sessions. 5. Identifying practical solutions through technical consultancies. 6. Enhancing innovation through developing new products.

19 Main Achievements Conducting diagnosis study for 71 small dairy company in 13 governorates and establishing data-base. Training of 32 SFD staff. Conducting 6 workshops in 6 governorates (attendees 201). Conducting 6 technological training programs in 5 governorates (attendees 98). Submitting 57 technical consultancies. Develop 4 new dairy product (sour cream, labenah, set and stirred yoghurt) in 5 SMEs. Introduce a new Spanish cheese product (Mahon cheese) to 5 dairy SMEs. Increasing the shelf life of some of the dairy products. Improving the quality of some of the dairy products. Preparing 4 technical handouts. Preparing 10 technical studies for dairy projects.

23 Scope The project focuses on the improvement of the milk and dairy sector through: Strengthening of the know-how and capabilities of the Egyptian technicians. Direct technical assistance provided by international and local experts to local companies.

29 Main Achievements 6 Egyptian technicians trained on practical relevant topics related with the milk and dairy sectors. Study visits to selected companies reinforced the acquired knowledge. Technical assistance provided to 21 Egyptian companies of the milk and dairy sectors and local technicians trained in practical assistance to companies. Training extension to 35 companies (78 trainees), and follow up of the proposed improvement measures. Develop 2 new dairy products to be adapted in the Egyptian Dairy SME s selected. Increasing the shelf life of some of the dairy products. Improving the quality of some of the dairy products.

30 Dairy Sector in Egypt No. of food factories in Egypt represent nearly 21 % of the total number. Nearly 50 % of food factories are working in the dairy sector. 80 % are MSEs (less than 20 labors). Cheeses represent nearly 60 % of the products. In 2013, the largest food exports were cheeses (2.6 billion L.E), 40 % exported by SMEs. Total yearly productivity of milk is nearly 6 million tons, produced from nearly 1.9 million buffalos and 1.8 million cows, 90 % produced by MSMEs (1-5 heads) (defragmented sector.

33 Main Problems Facing Dairy SMEs Lack of supply of a sufficient quantity of good quality milk and Low quality of raw milk. Improper milk handling and transporting. Highly Fragmented Sector. Poor GHP (infrastructure equipment practices - handling). Poor techniques, GMP and Lack of technical processing background. Lack of awareness of standards and low implementation of quality and food safety regulations. Poor facilities. Lack of environmental requirements and waste management. Low marketing capabilities.

34 Recommendations Improve the supply of milk (Quality Quantity). Clustering SM producers and processors and establishment of centralized services for those clusters (Collecting points cold transporting pasteurization units ripening stores cold distribution chain) to improve the overall dairy supply and value chains. Raising continuous awareness of SME s with Good Hygienic Practices and Egyptian food quality and safety standards and regulations. Promote the transfer of new technologies to guarantee the continuous improvement. Develop new innovative high value added products in the sector. Provide technical assistance to improve efficiency & productivity of dairy SMEs. Facilitate financial assistance with soft conditions and funding to apply new technologies and improve infrastructure. Encouragement of establishing marketing and exporting consortia.

38 Current Projects Pro-Poor Horticulture Value Chains in Upper Egypt (Salasel): A project for assisting more than 2000 poor producers in 6 Upper Egyptian governorates to improve their income by increasing their productivity and quality of produce linking them with high value markets and promoting group farming and marketing. Upgrading the Medicinal & Aromatic Plants Value Chain - Access to Export Markets (EMAP): An agro-industrial development project aiming at upgrading the value chain of MAP sector in Egypt to increase competitiveness of Egyptian MAP products in export markets. Funded by the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), EMAP is implemented by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in cooperation with Agriculture & Agro- Industries Technology Center - Ministry for Industry & Foreign Trade.
