SAMPLE SURVEY Introduction The integrated Sample Survey Scheme was started in Haryana State during the year for the first time and since then it is being continued systematically, regularly and the seasonal as well as annual estimates of production and average yield etc. are worked out for milk, eggs, wool and meat every year. The timely reliable estimates of major livestock products such as milk, eggs, wool and meat are most essential both at the central and state level to assess the progress made by the department on the basis of activities undertaken year to year. Objective of the Survey The main objectives of the survey are:- 1. To estimate the production of major livestock products such as milk, eggs, wool & Meat. 2. To estimate the number of animals and layers during the inter census period. 3. To work out the average milk yield per day of an in milk cow, buffalo and goat and per day yield of eggs and meat. 4. To study the various attendant and management practices adopted by people in respect of livestock rearing and poultry farming. Coverage The sample survey covered all the 21 districts of the State. Period of Survey The survey covered the period from 1 st March to 28 th /29 th February every year. Being variation in the production of livestock products from season to season, the field work is carried out in three seasons as per details given below: Season Summer Rainy Winter Months March to June (4 months) July to October (4 months) November to February (4 months) 23

Sample Plan A stratified multistage random sampling design is adopted for the survey. The district forms the stratum. The primary sampling unit is the village/urban ward. The household having in-milk bovines/goats/poultry layers is the second stage unit and the animal/bird in the household is the third stage unit of sampling. From onward, an enlarged sample size is selected for listing suggested by Govt. of lndia/lasri. 15% of the total village/urban wards in the state are selected for listing in a year. This sample unit in the state is allocated to various districts in proportion to the total livestock population as per livestock census. 1 /3 rd of these villages are covered during each season for listing. Detailed survey for the estimation of district wise estimates, full time Progress Assistants are posted for field work at the rate of 5 villages per Prag ress Assistant per district for detailed study in each season. Selection Size (a) The Following pattern was adopted for the selection of households: 1. First Round 1. Milk: Two cluster of two households in each village (bovines) one cluster of five households in each village (goats) 2. Eggs: Two cluster of five households in each village. 3. Wool: Sample of Five household (flocks) once in a season. 4. Meat: One registered slaughter house. 2. Second and Subsequent Rounds : 1. Milk: Four cluster of two households in each village (bovines) One cluster of 5 households in each village (goats) 2. Eggs: Four cluster of 5 households in each village. 3. Meat: One registered slaughter house. b. The following pattern was adopted for selection of animals in each village:- 1. Milk: Two animals in milk at random. 24

2. Eggs: All laying birds. 3. Wool: Two Rams, two weathers, two ewes & two lambs at random. 4. Meat: Three animals of each Species (Goat, sheep & Pigs) slaughtered on the day of visit in the registered slaughter house. The Survey is consisting of two parts i.e. (i) complete enumeration and (ii) detailed study. The complete enumeration deals with the work of counting the livestock and poultry birds for the estimation of numbers of animals in milk/milch animals etc. Besides survey staff, this work is also entrusted to the veterinary staff for a period of 2-3 days, in addition to their own duties. The complete enumeration is done only in the first month of each season. As regards detailed study, the department has appointed Progress Assistants on full time basis to carry out the sample survey work in the selected villages. The detailed survey is done continuously during all the three seasons of the year i.e. 12 months. Detailed study provided the results of estimated average yield and attendant practices. Staff Employed In the beginning, to carry out the sample survey work in the State for estimation of major livestock products viz. milk, eggs, wool and meat, the following posts were sanctioned :- 1. Joint Director 1 2. Deputy Director (Stat.) 2 3. Statistical officer 5 entitled 4. Computer Operator Supervisor-cum-Data Entry 10 7 operator 6 Enumerator Total in-position At each district, a Progress Assistant is posted who is made responsible for the collection of data from the selected households of the 5 selected villages for milk, eggs, wool and meat. In additional to it, data on attendant practices and feed and fodder fed to the animals is also collected by the enumerator from the households of these villages. 25

The Statistical Assistants are posted at the district head quarter supervise the survey work done by each Progress Assistance during each month on the spot and guide the field staff for proper collection of the data. The work of Progress Assistants and Statistical Assistants is also supervised by Statistical Officers and Deputy Director (Stat.) from time to time. The sample Survey is also reviewed by the Director General in the departmental meetings. Type of Data Collected The detailed data was collected from each of the selected village and selected households comprising of information:- (a) In respect of Milk Production I. Number of bovines maintained breed wise and age wise. II. Milk yield of cows and buffaloes both evening and morning on the day of visit Feed consumed by animals on the day of visit. IV. Particulars of animals such as order of lactation and month of calving. V. Production and disposal of milk and its products. VI. Feeding practices of animals (Stall-fed, grazed & both type). VII. Data on productive in milk animals and milk yield. VIII. Production and utilization of dung. (b) In respect of Egg Production I. Distribution of households according to number of birds. II. Detailed of poultry keeping households. Ill. Data on collection of productive layers and egg produced. IV. Data on productive broilers and meat yield. (c) In respect of Wool Production I. Production and utilization of wool. 26

The Schedules devised by the Govt. of India and Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (ICAR) New Delhi are used for collection of various information relating to production of major livestock products and study of livestock attendant practices. The details of the schedules are given as under: Schedule No. I : For general information about the village. II. For listing of households and enumeration of livestock and poultry kept in the selected villages on the day of survey. 1.1 For selection of cluster of households for detailed study. 1.2 Milk yield in sample households for detailed study 2.1 Egg production and attendant practices. 2.2 Egg production in commercial farms. 3.1 Yield of wool in sample households and attendant practices. 4.1 For information of yield of meat from Registered Slaughter Houses on the day of visit Supervision The supervision plays an important role in improving the quality of data and removing the technical difficulties, if any, on the spot in the field. Deputy Director of district Head Quarter & S.D.Os of Sub-division, and Statistical Assistants supervise the Sample Survey 27

work done by the Progress Assistant and remove their technical difficulties on the spot in the field Training Detailed training in the latest technique of data collection and filling up the schedules is imparted to sample survey staff responsible for this work. Periodical refresher training is also conducted to make them afresh and also appraised about the mistakes usually committed Estimation Procedure The estimation procedure for obtaining estimated number of inmilk/ milch animals, average milk yield per day per inmilk & milch animal and total milk production, Similarly the estimates of number of layers, average egg yield per season/annum and total egg production were followed as per the methodology prescribed by Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & fisheries, New Delhi. 28
