1 List of Technologies

2 As a first step of the technology procurement scheme, the main existing businesses and their means of organization were identified. The task focussed on mapping prevalent productive sectors that are well organised and have the capacity and capability to become involved in a procurement scheme. The analyses were mostly based upon literature studies, informal interviews and state-of-the-art knowledge. During this phase of the project, the following fields of business were identified to be of key importance for the rural development: Agro processing Metal engineering Fish industry Leather industry Textile industry As a second step, these fields of business were further analyzed and common processes within these fields of businesses were identified. These analyses indicated a substantial demand for cooling processes, packaging processes (mainly vacuum packaging), and drying processes within the agro processing sector, in addition to welding technology within metal engineering industries as well as sewing and looming processes within the textile and leather industries. In addition to these processes, a general demand for lighting was identified. A matrix with processes within the agro processing industry can be found in appendix 1. The next step was to specify relevant electrical equipment within these processes that has the potential to enhance the productivity and profitability within the identified businesses. The base for specifying technology demands were based upon a dialogue with important stakeholders representing rural productivity sectors and small and medium enterprises in rural areas. The outcome was a list of useful electrical equipment. At this stage, there is no ranking made between the different equipment and the project has only listed technologies based on rather broad functional descriptions. The appropriate energy efficient electrical equipment technologies to be considered for procurement for the rural wealth creation has been identified based on the following selection criteria: the technologies probability to be accepted by the end-users, the perceived strength of the potential aggregated procurement group, the technologies potential of actually making a difference in terms of energy efficiency and business development, the possibility of reaching at distinct functional descriptions of the required products, and the possibility to set clear evaluation criteria for selecting the winner. The following products are believed to fulfil the described criteria and could benefit from an aggregated procurement scheme: Single-phase electrical motors - Electric single phase motor has been identified as one of the cross-cutting products since it can be used to drive different type of machines suitable for rural enterprise creation such as milling machine, wood works, brick making and small cottage industries in food processing in the rural areas. Three phase electric motor Three phase motors can also be considered as option for those who will need to invest in slightly bigger projects to support metal works

3 establishment of rural micro, small manufacturing enterprises in agro- processing, milling, brick making etc. Welding machines Welding machines are being considered as means to support the establishment of small rural based metal fabrication industries. Cooling - Cooling rooms for storage of fruits & vegetables, milk and fish. Drives can be high efficient energy single motor, with option of solar and gas Lighting - For rural enterprises, households, hospitals, schools etc. (Energy efficient compact lighting system. Lighting control/timer for efficient energy utilization etc). Leather package - Leather goods processing machines to come as a single package of: Strap cutting, Stitching, Riveting, Punching Industrial sewing, Seem rubbing, Skiving, Trade mark embossing machine. For making leather products as leather wallet, bags, belts, shoes, jackets etc. Other technologies and processes have been discussed and may be reintroduced if any of the above are found to be too difficult to implement. The waiting list technologies are: Power loom- for weaving industrial sector, to stimulate the introduction of efficient electrical equipment. Focus is given to those energy efficient looming technologies that can stimulate wealth creation through rural productive sector for economic growth and poverty alleviation Vacuum packaging - for cashew nuts, milk, juice and fish (it is likely to zero down to cashew nut packaging as a single stand alone products) The project has decided to commence by procurement of equipment that is compatible with grid connection, i.e. can be used in the national grid, in order not to bring too many parameters on board in the first procurement scheme.
