3 INTRODUCTION Welcome to Dow s Fresh to Table Recipe Book, your reference for packaging solutions for a wide range of food, beverages and personal care applications. Dow s portfolio of packaging resins, adhesives and coatings has been developed to meet the increasing demands of consumers and businesses. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that all food and beverages arrive fresh to the table. Contents: Let s Brunch Refreshment Time Lunch On The Go Take A Break Relaxing At Home We hope you will find this Fresh to Table Recipe Book a helpful reference tool.

4 SUSTAINABILITY OF FLEXIBLE PACKAGING Today s consumers are increasingly environmentally conscious, meaning that any future innovation in flexible packaging must also meet market needs for sustainability. Dow has a long heritage and commitment to developing flexible packaging solutions with enhanced performance to deliver improved environmental, economic and social value across the value chain. Each year, globally, one third of the food produced for human consumption approximately 1.3 billion tonnes goes to waste. 1 Plastic packaging can help reduce food waste and spoilage, by protecting the quality and safety of food, preserving food freshness and extending shelf-life (up to three times more than non-packaged goods).

5 Whilst additional packaging may seem like a bad idea for the environment, data shows that the environmental benefits of food waste reduction surpass the impact of additional packaging by a factor of five. 2 The most important function of packaging is to protect the product inside the package. This must also, therefore, be the most important design criteria. Multilayer barrier structures provide the best functionality for food packaging while simultaneously providing the maximum environmental benefits. Worried about recyclability? Don t be: even when taking into account the lower recycling rates, the use of flexible plastic packaging achieves higher resource efficiency compared to any other packaging material. 1 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2 Denkstatt: How Packaging Contributes to Food Waste Prevention

7 THE IRRESISTIBLE, PRINTABLE JUICE CARTON High structural integrity, environmental stress crack resistance, adhesion retention and sensory performance. Did you know that paper-based cartons are more environmentally friendly than other packaging types such as HDPE and PET bottles? Research by IVL Swedish Environmental Research suggests that liquid board cartons produce 50% lower CO 2 emissions, largely due to a less intensive production process and a reduced level of transportation space. 9 MILK - POUCH FRESH MILK, IN AN ULTRA LIGHT POUCH Ideal for liquids, glossy, highly resistant to puncture. Did you know that the top 15 countries in the world for milk consumption are European countries, with Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands topping the list? Among European countries, Germany is leading in milk production, followed by France and the UK. Large geographical distance between point of production and point of consumption is a driver for high-barrier, sterilisable packaging, to preserve milk nutritional features during storage and transportation. 15 THE BARRIER LAMINATE THAT LOCKS IN THE WONDERFUL AROMA OF COFFEE Excellent seal integrity, high retention of vacuum and flex crack resistance. Did you know that coffee quality is directly linked to freshness? Packaging plays a key role in coffee s shelf-life as it can lose significant flavour and aroma in only one to two days. When packed, in hard vacuum packages (air removed by suction) or in soft vacuum packs (air is replaced by a protective gas), coffee can stay fresh for up to eight months. Besides playing a key role in preserving the quality of the coffee, packaging is also energy efficient because it preserves nine times more than is used for food production.
