3 Pervasive poverty and food insecurity All but 3 least developed countries 40% of human population Agriculture = up to 30% of GDP, up to 40% of labour force 33% of global crop land, but only 25% of food production Tropical Agriculture 3

4 Justification Access to new and traditional technologies key to development Individual and institutional capacity deficits Need for more people trained in technical areas Need for higher quality and relevance of the training Need for radical transformation of tertiary education and research institutions 4

6 ...and in agricultural innovation The GCARD called for a tripling of AR4D investments IFPRI estimates need for investment increase from US$51t 5.1 to US$ billion per year by 2025 To fill the capacity gaps becomes an urgent and essential prerequisite 6

7 Current International Partnerships Various interventions South-South North-South (bilateral or triangular) Majority of cases these interventions are not coordinated with each other All parties would gain significantly from: more coherent approaches avoiding duplication making use of synergies 7
