2 Rules for the Fall 2009 Sale This is the 7th All-Breed Performance Tested Bull Sale held in Southwest Missouri. Commercial and purebred buyers will have ndividual performance data available, along with pedigree, to select a prospective herd sire. The rules for the sale were developed by the Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association. Required Performance and Conformation Information A. The bulls must be produced in a registered herd that is enrolled in the Missouri On-Farm Performance Testing Program and their respective breed association records program. Bulls may also qualify by being tested at an approved test station under university supervision. B. The bulls eligible for the 2009 Fall Sale must have been calved from December 1, 2007 through September 30, C. All calves in the herd eligible for registry must have been weighed at weaning for that season. (Herd definition: All cattle on a given farm and handled as a separate unit.) D. The bull calves nominated must be weighed at weaning (between 160 and 280 days of age.) They must have a 365-day weight ratio of 95% or more. If 10 or more male calves are sired by a given sire, they may be used for the season male average. The steers will be adjusted upward 5% to a bull equivalent to determine average weaning weight of male calves. (A steer is any calf castrated when weaning weights are taken.) A first time consignor may consign a bull, tested at an approved test station, to one sale, even though his entire herd was not tested. E. The bull s yearling weight must be taken at the associations recommended time (320 to 0 days for most breeds). He must have a 365 day weight of 1100 pounds or better and measure 9 inches or better at the hip. F. Bulls must rank in the 50th percentile or better for 2 of the following 5 traits: Calving ease or birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, and ultrasound/carcass/intramuscular/fat for non-parent bulls in the most recent sire evaluation. G. All weighings must be supervised by the Regional Livestock Specialist or authorized personnel. H. Age of dam adjustments will follow the breed associations guidelines.. If the bull has been in service prior to the sale, this will be announced from the auction block. J. Bulls to be eligible for this sale will have to be owned as a cow-calf unit prior to the time the calf is 120 days of age. Exceptions to this rule, partnership cattle, leased herds, etc., will be determined by the sale committee prior to consignment. K. All bulls must be semen tested and examined for breeding soundness by a veterinarian within 90 days of sale, using standard assay analysis of semen approved by the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri. 4 Expected progeny differences ( s) provide the best means of comparing genetic merit of animals within the breed. For each trait evaluated, the incorporates the animal s individual and progeny performance with progeny performance information from other relatives. By utilizing national sire evaluation information, the evaluation also utilizes information from related traits and accounts, in part, or differences in the genetic merit of herdmates as well as genetic trends within the breed. Each trait evaluation predicts expected progeny performance relative to a fixed breed average - hence the term Expected Progeny Difference. The key word is difference. The itself does not imply good or bad performance, only whether he performance of progeny is expected to be above or below that of another individual in that breed. s are given as + or -, in this catalog. If neither a + or - is shown, that amount will be a +. Breeders should, on an individual basis, decide what is best for them by considering what raits are important to their program, their current herd performance, and the degree of change desired. Percentile Rank - As the percentile moves toward 1, it ndicates smaller birth weight s and larger weaning, yearling, milk, and intramuscular fat s. Accuracy - Refers to the reliability of an. The closer to 1 the more reliable it is with less change likely. PE refers o pedigree estimate which averages the sire and dam. BKS refers to backsolution used to obtain breeding values of non-parents by back-solving from the predicted parental breeding value. Calving Ease - This is the difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. Birth Weight - The expected difference in average birth weight (lbs) of progeny. Birth weight reflects prenatal growth potential and may also be used as an indicator of calving ease. Maternal Milk - The expected difference in average weaning weight (lbs) of daughter s calves which is attributed to milking ability. This evaluation is obtained by subtracting 1/2 of the Weaning Weight (the direct effect on growth) from the Maternal Weaning Weight. Weaning Weight - The expected difference in average weaning weight of calves. The evaluation reflects the genetic influence on pre-weaning growth rate. Yearling Weight - The expected difference in average yearling weight of progeny. It reflects genetic influence on both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth rate. ntramuscular Fat - This is a predictor of the difference in a sires progeny for % intramuscular fat or marbling in the ribeye muscle. Larger amounts favor higher carcass quality grades.
