1. Every summer, heavy rains fell in the south and the Nile would flood. This means that houses and farms that are built close to the river would flood every summer as well. What is a solution to this problem?

Solution: The Egyptian would often move their houses away from the close banks of the Nile river and settle in smaller streams connected to the river. However, the flooding of the Nile every summer would bring rich soils and silt. The river flooded at the same time every year, so farmers knew when the land would be good for planting

Bell Ringer: 10/17/2016 Take out your worksheets from Friday! - River Valley Civilizations half sheet - What would you do? Fill out Ancient Egypt section on the River Valley Civilizations half sheet.

2. Because of heavy rains in the summer, some farmers moved their farms and homes further away from the Nile river. This prevented damage during flooding season, however, the soil is not as rich where they moved. What is a solution to this problem?

Solution: Farmers used irrigation and canals to bring water to their crops from the Nile River. They also used buckets on a pole to spread water on the fields.

3. The weather is very sunny in Egypt. FOr eight months of the year it was hot and for four months of the year it was cooler. The Ancient Egyptians worked long hours in the field, what is one way that the Egyptians could stay cool during the hot summer months?

Solution: Egyptians made clothing from plants. Thread made from the flax plant was woven into cloth called linen. It is lightweight and cool. Men wore them around their waists and women wore loose, sleeveless dresses.

4. Over time, the Egyptians started using the Nile for transportation and trade. The Nile river current flows north, so the boats could drift and carry people and goods up the Nile. The winds of the Nile blow South. If an egyptian trader wanted to sail South, how could he get there?

Solution: Egyptians used boats to travel up and down the Nile. They added sails and oars to their boats when they needed it. The sails helped them ride on the opposite current.
