Weed Control Solutions Battling Resistance Palmer Amaranth the dominant resistance species

Managing Multiple MOA- R Palmer Amaranth Palmer amaranth has developed resistance to multiple modes of action in the United States over the last 25 years: DNA s (1989) PS II Inhibitors (1993) ALS Chemistry (1994) Glyphosate (2006) HPPD s (2009) PPO s (2011, > 2015) Due to this species diversity, ability to adapt, extreme reproductive capacity, rapid growth rate, and highly competitive nature, it poses a significant challenge to row crop agriculture. Therefore, a comprehensive management strategy is required to successfully manage this pest. Confirmed resistance to the PPO herbicides (Group 14) requires a reassessment and overhaul of current soybean herbicide programs.

Managing Multiple MOA- R Palmer Amaranth Key DuPont Crop Protection products used as part of a comprehensive management strategy for control of Palmer amaranth: Early Preplant Burndown Herbicides DuPont Canopy EX herbicide DuPont LeadOff herbicide DuPont Afforia herbicide DuPont FirstShot SG herbicide At- Planting Herbicides DuPont Canopy herbicide DuPont Trivence herbicide DuPont Envive herbicide Early Postemergence DuPont Classic herbicide DuPont Synchrony XP herbicide (add on for improved control of morningglory, hemp sesbania, & yellow nutsedge)

Managing Multiple MOA- R Palmer Amaranth Implement an effective early preplant burndown program Need to be completely clean of winter vegetation at- planting Increases performance of at- planting applications, both contact and residual Plant early Get ahead of the primary germination period and rapid growth phase of palmer amaranth Better chance of activating rainfall, overall better moisture conditions and positive environment Manage for quick canopy closure Plant aggressive varieties Planting pattern (minimum twins on 38 rows) Overlap residual herbicides with timely applications Early Preplant contact & residual to manage winter vegetation At- Planting contact & residual, mulitple MOA s with residual Early Post automatic at days post- planting, contact & residual, again multiple MOA s are needed

Early Preplant Burndown Herbicides - Quick Review: Canopy EX 1.5 oz/a, strong burndown plus long residual, soybeans only LeadOff oz/a, strong burndown plus long residual for corn, cotton & soybean (cotton & soybean - 30 to 60 days preplant, rate dependent); no grain sorghum Afforia 2.5 oz/a, strong burndown plus moderate residual for corn, cotton, soy, grain sorghum & rice FirstShot 0.75 oz/a, strong burndown, limited residual, any crop - Apply in combination with glyphosate plus 2,- 4- D. Read and follow all label directions. 7
