1 MSC (PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY)

2 MSC (P (PLANT BIOTECHNOLOG IOTECHNOLOGY) There is now a growing realization that India has to emerge as an economy driven by knowledge. Given the rapid progress that intellectual enterprises are making worldwide, higher education must benefit from a continuous accretion of knowledge through research. This is what TERI University is attempting to do through all its programmes, for the benefit of not only Indian citizens but people from other countries as well who would pass through the portals of this institution. This university offers education supported by rigorous research. Background Biotechnology has proven to be a boon for mankind with its potential applications in the agricultural, industrial and medical sectors. Advances in the field have provided immense challenges and entrepreneurial opportunities and have made biotechnology an attractive career option. The MSc in Plant Biotechnology at TERI University is an intensive 2-year programme, which places emphasis on scientific principles, and also includes an overview of socio-economic and ethical concepts associated with biotechnology. Rigorous training is imparted to students through courses that cover various aspects of Plant Sciences, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. Hands-on training is provided through commensurate bench-level training related to the topics covered in each semester. Graduate students who complete this programme will posses the confidence and skills to apply the principles and techniques learnt to a wide range of scientific problems, and are expected to build rewarding careers in public and private organizations. 3 MSC (P (PLANT BIOTECHNOLOG IOTECHNOLOGY) Programme Overview The programme has been formulated with an objective of advancing education and research in the area of plant biotechnology with adequate attention to regulatory framework. The programme is one of its own kind since conceptual understanding will be imparted in cutting-edge disciplines of science along with providing a preliminary exposure to regulatory issues and bioethical concerns related to plant biotechnology. Emphasis is also laid on imparting training in applied mathematics, statistics and computational skills so as to looking into the projected demand of a trained cadre adept at approaching biological problems in truly inter-disciplinary and integrative manner. Courses have been specifically structured to impart concepts pertaining to advanced areas of research in plant genomics and contemporary approaches employed by molecular biologists. This programme sensitizes the students to critical regulatory and ethical issues in field of plant biotechnology. Therefore, a graduate of this programme may be expected to have both the specialized knowledge and practical experience required to address contemporary problems in research and industry. Eligibility Criteria A minimum eligibility of a Bachelor s degree in Sciences, preferably Life Sciences, with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years/semesters of the qualifying examinations), wherever marks are awarded, or a minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.75 on a 10 point scale will be required. Selection procedure Admission to the MSc programme is made on the basis of a combined entrance examination conducted by TERI University. Applications are invited from the candidates by advertising the examination in leading newspapers. Details may be seen at the TERI University website < Pedagogical tools The classroom lectures would be complemented with extensive laboratory practicals, case study analysis, classroom discussions, guest lectures by experts and discussion forums. During the fourth semester, students will be involved in full-time laboratory-based research for their major project.

5 ABOUT TERI UNIVERSITY TERI University was established in 1998 as an initiative of TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) and subsequently got recognition as a deemed university from the University Grants Commission. Since its inception, the University has evolved into a hub of research and teaching in the field of energy, infrastructure, environment, and sustainable development. The University benefits not only from TERI's cutting-edge research and highly competent faculty but also from its infrastructure which includes state-of-the-art laboratories advanced IT facilities, and well-stocked libraries. Over the past 25 years, TERI has been associated with the World Bank, ADB, IPCC, UNEP, UNDP, SADC, and European Commission, and has won their respect and admiration. The University and TERI have complemented each other to great effect, influencing the evolution of the academic units, leading to collaborative research and programmes, joint studies, and mutual support for seminars, symposia, and conferences. In February 2002, the TERI University entered into an MoU with the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies of Yale University. The TERI University signed MoUs, in 2004, with the Nottingham University, UK; in 2006, with the University of Saskatchewan, Canada; and in 2008, with the University of Iceland, the North Carolina State University and the Friei University, Germany. These inter-institutional MoUs are aimed at facilitating mutually beneficial exchange of students, faculty, knowledge, resources and ideas. The University receives no regular grants or aid from any source. In 2002, the Ford Foundation gave an endowment to the University for setting up the Department of Natural Resources. In 2004, the NTPC gave a grant for setting up the NTPC Chair in the Department of Policy Studies. In the same year, the Department of Personnel Training, Government of India, entered into a collaboration with the University for running a master's programme for mid-career civil servants. In 2005, NHPC gave a grant for setting up the NHPC chair in the Department of Policy Studies. Placements The university attempts to place students in suitable organizations for their minor project, major project, as well as final placement. A Placement Cell has been formed with the objective of exploring placement opportunities at an institutional level.
