The mark allocation of each question will determine the length of your answer. Give enough facts to earn the marks allocated. Don't waste time by giving more information than required. 7. Please write neatly we cannot mark illegible handwriting. 8. Start the answer for each question on a NEW page, for example Question 1 new page, Question 2 new page. 9. You may use a non-programmable calculator and appropriate mathematical instruments. 10. Any student caught cheating will have his or her examination paper and notes confiscated. The College will take disciplinary measures to protect the integrity of these examinations. 11. If there is something wrong with or missing from your question paper or your answer book, please inform your invigilator immediately. Redraw the table and complete it by placing a tick ( ) or a cross (X) in the box to indicate whether the statement does or does not relate to Active immunity or Passive immunity. Statement Antibodies produced if the body is reinfected by the same pathogen An antibody reacts with an antigen Antibodies received in breast milk Weakened microorganisms used in the vaccine Active immunity Passive immunity (5) 1.5 A South African Department of Health study estimated that 28% of pregnant women were living with HIV / AIDS in What does the acronym HIV stand for? (1) Describe the basic structure of the HI-virus. (2) A. Explain why the South African Department of Health has managed to obtain statistics and information about HIV from pregnant women so easily. (2) B. Explain why it is difficult to get accurate statistics regarding the total number of people living with HIV / AIDS in South Africa. (2) [50] TOTAL SECTION A: 50 ICG 7 NSC Grade 11

SECTION B (80 MARKS) ANSWER BOTH QUESTIONS QUESTION The simplified flow diagram below illustrates the moss's life cycle in which the moss leaf contains 10 chromosomes. Study the flow diagram below and answer the questions that follow. Source: Carol Drew What is meant by alternation of generations? (3) Identify the processes numbered i. and ii. (2) What phase of the life cycle is represented by A? (1) Is the phase labelled "A" haploid or diploid and how many chromosomes would it have? (2) Name the type of nutrition performed by A. (1) Identify the structures labelled 2, 3 and 5. (3) ICG 8 NSC Grade 11

Compare the structure of the Gametophyte generation of the moss plant with that of a fern plant. Tabulate your answer. (2) 2.2 Angiosperms are not dependent on water for fertilisation Name the male Angiosperm gamete and explain how it gets to the female gamete from the organ in which it is made. (4) Explain the significance of seeds to Angiosperms, making them the most successful plants on earth. (4) Examine the pictures below and answer the questions that follow A X B Z Y Source : Grade 11 Life Sciences Exemplar Which of the flowers A or B will be wind pollinated? Provide a visible reason for your answer. (2) Provide labels for the parts X, Y and Z. (3) Recently in our newspapers we have read about people being infected with TB which has mutated and is referred to as the MDR TB strain. Our local research has shown that some TB strains which cause a drug resistant disease could be resistant to more drugs than previously thought. People infected with these MDR TB strains of TB are freely passing on the dangerous bacteria as the process of diagnosis is too slow. The diagnosis takes 6-8 weeks to identify while the person is walking around passing on TB. The researchers say that one of our first priorities is to diagnose TB quickly. The researchers also consider that by creating these drug resistant strains of TB, we could be creating a SUPER BUG. The drug-resistant TB strains cost about R per patient to treat. In comparison, the drug-susceptible TB costs R200 to treat. Source: Carol Drew ICG 9 NSC Grade 11

2.3.1 What do the letters MDR in MDR-TB represent? (3) What has caused these bacteria to become drug resistant? (2) List TWO conditions that can cause the bacterium to become active. (2) How could doctors test to see if a patient has TB? Mention TWO methods they could use. (2) Mention briefly how TB is managed. (No mention of the actual drugs is needed, only the process.) (4) [40] QUESTION The following question refers to animal biodiversity Name FOUR characteristics of animal groups which are considered when classifying animals into their respective Phyla. (4) 3.2 Porifera have no true tissues but 2 layers of cells. A. Name the body cells that capture food. (1) B. Provide a term describing them not being able to move. (1) 3.3 The diagrams below shows two forms of the organisms in a Phylum you've studied. A B Source : Identify the phylum and the name given to each form. (3) Which body layer in members of this phylum forms the stinging cells? (1) What is the function of these cells? (2) ICG 10 NSC Grade 11

3.4 Examine the picture below and answer the questions that follow: Identify the phylum to which the animal in the picture below belongs. (1) Source: Provide ONE visible reason for classifying this animal into the phylum mentioned. (1) This animal is said to be triploblastic. Explain what is meant by this term. (3) Name ONE animal belonging to the same Phylum with a parasitic lifestyle. (1) 3.5 Despite a great increase in the demand for food only 70% more land is now used for farming.one of the reasons for this is increased productivity i.e. a higher yield per hectare.this increase in yield is due to GMO's and chemicals. Over the last 30 years, people have become more aware of the use of chemicals in farming.some people are concerned about the effects of these on their health and choose to buy organically grown produce. The farmers who use organic methods to produce food do not use chemicals on their crops Give ONE reason for an increase in the demand for food over the years. (1) Food insecurity has had a big impact on 'poor' people in South Africa. Mention ONE result. (1) State ONE way in which each of the following has helped to increase productivity: A. Pesticides (1) B. Fertilisers (1) Explain how the use of pesticides could destroy food chains. (2) Explain what is meant by GMO's. (2) Explain how GMO's can pose a threat to food security. (3) ICG 11 NSC Grade 11

3.5.7 Write a paragraph on why you think it is a good idea for the agricultural world to continue producing GMO's (5) Define the term 'food wastage'. (2) Given the following data Total waste and loss per person per year =215 kg Waste at both the production and retail stages =110 kg Waste by consumers = 15kg What percentage waste is produced by the consumers? Show your calculation (4) [40] TOTAL SECTION B: 80 ICG 12 NSC Grade 11
