Content What is a blending (extender) resin? Benefits of extender resins Differences between the grades Examples for high performance grades Seite 2

What is a blending resin? Blending resins (extender resins) are used in the paste formulation partially replacing the normal paste resin: Paste resin X Extender resin X Plasticiser Stabiliser X = parts Seite 3

Classes of paste PVC Suspension polymerisation: Extender resin Intense stirring (has influence on particle size distribution) Suspension aid Initiator soluble in VCM Particle size: about 30 μm Reaction of liquid VCM in Water Special micro-s-polym.: Paste resin Homogenising of VC with pressure (defines particle size) Emulsifier Initiator soluble in VCM Particle size: about 3 μm (Vinnolit) Emulsion polymerisation: Paste resin Emulsifier Slow stirring Initiator soluble in water Particle size: 0,1 some μm in loose agglomerates 10 μm 1 μm 1 μm Seite 4

Positive effects of extender resin 1. Extender resins reduce viscosity and minimize unwanted flow characteristics of plastisols (like dilatancy). Thus they allow higher production speed, easier handling or, on the other hand, reduction of plasticiser or other liquid components in the formulation. 2. Extender resins generally improve special handling properties like deaeration behaviour and viscosity increase during storage of the plastisol. 3. Extender resins can be used to regulate the surface gloss of the finished product. Seite 6

Conclusions Extender resins decrease the paste viscosity and suppress flow anomalies like dilatancy. This allows a lower plasticiser dosage. Extender resins increase the matt effect of the surface. The strength of these effects depend on the grades used. Special grades perform better than standard grades. Extender resins can have influence on the mechanical performance, special grades avoid this. Copolymeric extender resins have additional effect, they accelerate the fusion of the paste. Seite 15
