2 BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOMATERIALS, CROSS-CUTTING TECHNOLOGIES The biotechnology and biomaterials fields are characterised by the fact that they encompass and serve a wide range of different scientific disciplines, giving rise to a plural and remarkably complex technological convergence. The technology centres which make up the IK4 Research Alliance combine their capacities in order to make the most of this complexity and to develop a set of tools within the life science field which provide first-rate technological solutions that can be applied to a diverse range of different industrial sectors. 8 IK4 Research Alliance IK4 is a private and independent alliance of R&D centres, a benchmark in the European R&D context. It comprises 9 organisations in the Basque Country: AZTERLAN, CEIT, GAIKER, IDEKO, IKERLAN, LORTEK and TEKNIKER. Our aim is to generate technological and scientific knowledge, promote its uptake and transfer it to the business framework.
