7 Congratulations to Dr. Bruce McNaughton, the inaugural winner of Alberta s AHFMR Polaris Award The Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) Polaris Award was created to recruit world leaders in health science research to Alberta. This ten-year, $10 million award has been matched through a partnership with the University of Lethbridge and the Informatics Circle of Research Excellence (icore) for a total of $20 million. The AHFMR Polaris Award will support a comprehensive theoretical and empirical research effort proposed by Dr. McNaughton in the field of brain dynamics, information coding, computation, and memory that will complement ongoing research at the University of Lethbridge s Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience. The Award will support Dr. McNaughton s relocation from the University of Arizona to the University of Lethbridge to join the renowned behavioural neuroscience team headed by Dr.BryanKolbandDr.RobSutherland.Aswell,theAward willalsosupporttherecruitmentofaresearchteamof junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students, and the establishment of an advanced facility for neural ensemble recording and cellular-level functional brain imaging.inthiswaytheahfmrpolarisawardwill catalyze provincial, national, and international research collaborations in the field of behavioral, systems, and computational neuroscience, that will yield knowledge and innovation for the benefit of Albertans and people around the world, and train the next generation of scientists in this field. Potential graduate students and post-doctoral trainees with interest and established skills in systems or cellular neurophysiology, or computational, molecular, or imaging approaches to studying integrative functions of the brain, should send their CVs and letters of interest to Dr. McNaughton at bruce.mcnaughton@uleth.ca

12 You re Holding Sustainable Science The pages of this journal are made of recycled fiber. The staff of Science is doing its share to reduce, reuse, and recycle. The paper used in printing the pages of this journal contains reused materials. The additional wood used to create this paper comes from a paper mill participating in the PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) ensuring the paper is made from a sustainable managed forest. And in the future Science and AAAS will look to do more to advance science and conserve the environment. Sustainable Science, now printed on recycled paper with 30% postconsumer content.

Mettler Toledo For information Protein Immunoblot Imaging and Analysis The FluorChem Q Imaging System provides the sensitivity of chemiluminescence and the quantitative power of fluorescence in one easy-to-use instrument. Designed with fast-lens technology, a peltier-cooled camera captures high-resolution images with a linear dynamic range that outperforms film, and with speeds 10 times faster than a laser scanner. Equipped with three integrated excitation sources for multicolor blots, the FluorChem Q is compatible with Cy dyes, Alexa dyes, Q dots, and chemiluminescent protein immunoblotting kits. This versatile system can also image fluorescent DNA and protein gels. The system comes with intuitive software that automatically stores all experimental imaging protocols as well as channel and filter settings. Alpha Innotech For information Competent Cells The Multiple-Deletion Strain 42 (MDS42) features competent cells that have been completely sequenced and analyzed by genome. A series of deletions have also been performed to remove nonessential genetic elements, which has improved the transformation efficiencies and improved protein expression. With 15 percent of nonessential regions of the genome removed, the MDS42 competent cells contain no insertion sequence elements, phage and prophage elements, recombination regions, or endonuclease A. Scarab Genomics For information UV-Visible Spectrophotometers The new Helios Zeta double-beam and Helios Omega single-beam ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometers are designed for research, routine quality control, and teaching. They are cost-effective instruments that offer excellent throughput and affordable analysis of liquid and solid samples. The systems offer unlimited method and data storage using USB memory devices. Integrated software provides control for a multitude of laboratory requirements from fixed wavelength measurements and quantitative analysis to wavelength scanning and multicomponent analysis. ThermoFisher Scientific For information Chiral Chromatography Columns Lux columns are a new line of polysaccharide-based columns for the identification and resolution of enantiomers. They are offered with two chiral stationary phases, both of which make use of coated derivatized cellulose as the chiral selector. The two phases combine to create a dependable screening set with a wide range of selectivity. The columns are offered in 3 µm and 5 µm particle sizes.
