2 About the Symposium The Oil Technologists Association of India (OTAI), Southern Zone and CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad (CSIR-IICT) are jointly organizing a National Symposium on Polymers & Coatings during September 7-8, 2012 at CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad. In recent years, research in the area of polymeric materials and coatings has expanded exponentially. Continuous efforts on design and development of new monomers, novel polymers and functional polymeric materials through innovative methodologies, functionalization/modification of polymeric backbone, adoption of nanotechnological principles have resulted in new and improved products. These include coatings, adhesives, packaging, biomedical, electronics, energy, agricultural and strategic applications. There has also been significant growth on the development of eco-friendly polymers based on renewable resources, materials formed by supramolecular assembly, organic-inorganic hybrids, and biodegradable polymers. The two day symposium shall cover all these aspects of specialty polymers and coatings, and shall provide an excellent platform to bring both scientists and technologists together on a common platform to network, share knowledge and provide future directions. Specific topics that shall be covered are: Polymers: Novel monomers, polymerization techniques, and characterization Structure property relationship of polymers, modeling and simulations Biological and biomedical applications of polymers Polymers for energy, electronics and packaging applications Polymers for automobiles, defense and space applications Polymers and the environment (Polymer recycling, biodegradable polymers and polymers from renewable resources) Polymer blends and nanocomposites Adhesives/sealants etc. Coatings: High performance protective coatings Coatings based on vegetable oil and renewable/natural resources Functional and intelligent coatings Nano/hybrid coatings The programme will consist of Plenary and Invited Lectures along with Oral and Poster Presentations related to the above areas. A special session will be devoted for panel discussion on strengthening the industry/institute/ university interaction for Sustainable development of Polymers and Coatings involving experts and delegates from both academia and industry. Please find the enclosed form for oral/poster presentations and note that the deadline for sending the Abstracts is July 31, An exhibition is also being organized during the symposium. 3 About Host Organizations OTAI: The Oil Technologists Association of India (OTAI) is a non-profit association and was registered under the Societies of Registration Act XXI of 1860 in Since then the Association has been growing under the stewardship of distinguished Scientists, Oil Technologists and Industrialists. The Association has five zones with a membership of about 1600 in Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western and Central India with its Head Office at Kanpur. The Head Office and Central Executive Council of the Association co-ordinate national and international activities of its five zones. OTAI has been recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, as a Scientific and Research Organization devoted to promotion of R & D activities in the areas of Oils, Fats and Derived Products. The Association also funds R & D projects at academic Institutes. The Association publishes a quarterly Scientific Periodical Journal of Lipid Science & Technology of international repute. OTAI is an Association of Chemists, Engineers, Managers, Scientists, Technologists and Industrialists. Its objective is to promote the advancement of technology and research in oil seeds, oils and fats and other lipids and derived products. It also endeavours to encourage all round developments of proper processing and utilization of these products. In addition, OTAI helps in improving professional competence of Chemists, Engineers, Scientists and Technologists by disseminating relevant information regarding latest technological developments by organizing lectures, symposia, workshops, refresher courses on different topics in the field of oilseed and edible oil processing, soaps and oleochemicals and surfactants. OTAI is playing a pivotal role in transferring the scientific and technological developments in the field of oils and fats to the industry. CSIR-IICT: Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad is a premier R&D Institute in India under the aegis of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. The Institute had its origin as the Central Laboratories for Scientific & Industrial Research (CLSIR), established in 1944 by the then Government of Hyderabad State. After integration of Hyderabad State with the Indian Union, the laboratory expanded with its growing activities. The main building was formally opened by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India on January 2, In 1956, the Central Laboratories came under the aegis of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi and was renamed as Regional Research Laboratory, Hyderabad (RRL-H). The RRL-H was rechristened as the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad in 1989, recognizing the multidisciplinary activities and the expertise developed by the Institute in the field of chemical technology. It has made significant contributions in the last six decades in that field and celebrating its Diamond Jubilee. Major areas of research at IICT are: Natural Products Chemistry, Agrochemicals, Drugs & Intermediates, Specialty and Fine Chemicals, Polymers & Functional Materials, Fluoroorganics, Inorganic & Physical Chemistry (Catalysis & Material Science), Lipid Sciences & Technology, Energy & Chemical Engineering and Design & Engineering. With over 450 highly professional and dedicated scientists and technical officers/technicians, excellent laboratory and instrument facilities for research in chemical sciences and technology and allied sciences, IICT is known nationally as well as internationally for its contributions both in basic and applied research. Polymers & Functional Materials Division (PFM) conducts both applied & basic research in the field of polymers, coatings, adhesives, composites, biomaterials, conducting polymers, utilization of renewable resources, and hybrids etc. The Division was known as Surface Coatings Division up to late 80 s and Organic Coatings and Polymers Division till October In more than 6 decades of its existence the division had contributed immensely for the transfer of various technologies and processes to industry and strategic sectors and the basic research has been published in national and international journals of repute. Keeping in pace with the global trends division has initiated new research in the area of fluoropolymers, well-defined block copolymers, self assembly, green composites, nanocomposites, hyperbranched polymers, functional coatings, materials for solar energy generation and storage, renewable/natural resource based green polymers etc. Submission of Papers: The Symposium will consist of Invited Presentations by experts and a few selected oral/poster presentations by professionals / researchers on the Session Themes. 5 OTAI (SZ) ANNUAL MERIT AWARDS O.P.Narula OTAI (SZ) Technology Award* Annual Cash Award of Rs. 7,500/- was instituted with the support of Shri O.P. Narula, New Delhi and OTAI (SZ). The award is for the best project report prepared for a specific topic. The topic for this year s Award is Innovations in Vegetable Oil-based Coatings for Sustainability. The applicant has to submit a 10 to 15 page report (5 copies) on the above topic to the Secretary, OTAI (SZ). O.P. NARULA OTAI (SZ) YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD* Annual Cash Award of Rs. 5000/- was instituted with the support of Shri O.P. Narula, New Delhi and OTAI (SZ). This award is for a researcher who is engaged in Oils & Allied Products and should not have completed 35 years of age as on 1st January The award is for Publications/ Patents which include applicant s name among the authors.
