2 Introduction Science and Innovation Management Studies (SIMS), is organized by the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park PRBB. It is an initiative of the Economics Department of Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in collaboration with the Continuing Education Institute (IDEC). The objective of SIMS is to create a world-class framework in Barcelona for a learning and knowledge centre for entrepreneurship and innovation of new emerging technologies, with special emphasis on biotechnologies. SIMS courses are sponsored by the Bioregion of Catalonia and the BBVA Foundation. SIMS offers executive biotechnology business courses targeted at the biotechnology industry. SIMS facilitates a co-operative industry approach to professional education and development. This targeted executive programme will serve to improve and update overall skills and knowledge levels, and to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation. The SIMS executive biotechnology business course is a comprehensive, hands-on executive program that will help entrepreneurs and existing biotechnology companies to adopt best practice approaches. SIMS is specialized in case based studies that are directly applicable to the business issues of European biotech companies. SIMS is a learning platform between companies, technology regions and academia for exchanging experiences, information, good practices and knowledge. The programme consists of 4 focused modules of three days each and the topics include: Basic Business Essentials of Biotechnology IP, licensing and the pipeline for value creation Biotech financing, partnering, M&As and strategic alliances Clinical trial strategy and regulatory approval All course contents are aimed at the life cycle of a biotech company. The first module in this series of intensive Executive Biotechnology Business Certificate courses in innovation and entrepreneurship of biotechnologies takes place in Barcelona from June 29 to July 1, 2006.

5 the organisers SIMS will be legally placed under, and managed by the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB). The SIMS biotechnology business certificate courses will be organized in partnership with the Economics and Business Department, and IDEC, of the Pompeu Fabra University. A strategic advisory board will secure that SIMS has the right impact in the international market. The strategic advisory board will help SIMS to organise courses and faculty as well as to attract the sponsors necessary to cover an important part of the revenue. Furthermore, our strategic advisory board will help us to deliver the highest standards to all our customers and partners, the key players are critical as strategic advisors for research, education, products and quality assurance. The SIMS strategic advisory board will be formed of top candidates from government, academia and industry, who represent the most important elements in the biotechnology value chain. All with a strong interest in building a European reference node, that can help to strengthen the European biotechnology industry. It forms the centre of an extensive metropolitan region with 4.6 million inhabitants and is the economic, cultural and administrative capital of Catalonia, situated in the north-east of Spain, on the shores of the Mediterranean. The city is particularly noted for its climate and high standard of living, as well as its architecture and cultural activities. PRBB forms part of the Bioregion of Catalonia, the interface between government and industry which promotes interaction and builds partnerships amongst all key stakeholders in the biotech sector.
