1 Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics Solutions for Extrusion Coating

2 With more than 5 years of history in the extrusion coating and lamination marketplace, Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics is committed to providing innovative products, technical expertise and developmental facilities to solve the industry s most challenging needs. The extrusion coating market is a growing market as global brand owners continue to choose aseptic cartons, stand-up pouches and paper as packaging formats over glass, metal and rigid containers. As consumers drive toward more sustainable solutions, Dow is proud to offer everything from basics to breakthroughs and be your total solutions provider. Solutions for the Extrusion Coating Marketplace Extrusion Coating at Pack Studios An Industry-Leading Application Development Facility One of the ways Dow showcases its innovative culture is through the newly launched Pack Studios, one of the industry s leading application development facilities. For Dow s EMEA customers, working with the Packaging & Specialty Plastics business offers preferential access to this nextgeneration collaborative facility located at our EMEA headquarters in Horgen, Switzerland. This innovation center is closely connected with our regional centers in Mozzate, Italy which focuses on functional adhesives for lamination and the center of excellence for films in Tarragona, Spain, as well as with our global network of Pack Studios centers. With the help and support of Dow s marketing, technical service, and R&D teams, the experience starts with collaborative technology sessions to develop new concepts. Then, we take those concepts to on-site fabrication facilities which include multi-layer blown and cast film lines as well as our extrusion coating facility. Fabricated structures are benchmarked on commercial-scale packaging equipment. For in depth assessment, samples are tested in Dow s physical and analytical laboratories and can also undergo sensory testing. With product life cycles shortening, we know there is significantly more pressure for the industry to bring new packaging designs to market faster than ever. With Pack Studios this process can be accelerated to provide you a competitive edge in the marketplace. The Latest Technology to Keep You Ahead Pack Studios-EMEA has a Davis-Standard extrusion coating / extrusion lamination equipment which is very versatile for a wide variety of laminates based on different substrates and coextruded plastics. The equipment features multiple modern processing control parameters such as a direct molten curtain temperature scan for improved coating consistency. The versatile set-up options of the line, coupled with our broad industry expertise, offers direct scale-up of results to industrial facilities. Over the last 3 years Dow has built extrusion coating knowledge based on its patented feed-block technology, considered a standard in flat die extrusion today. 3 Dow s for Extrusion Coating and Lamination Dow offers an extensive and everwidening range of product choices. From applications that demand cost efficiency to those that require the very best seal integrity, Dow has solutions to deliver the coating performance you want. As the key building block for the extrusion coating market, Dow s LDPE products offer a good balance of processability, sealability, barrier and cost. Additionally we have added the AGILITY Performance LDPE resins to our portfolio, offering fast line speed and thinner coatings for more efficient conversion processes meeting the most stringent industry requirements. Among the family of DOWLEX Polyethylene Resins, DOWLEX 26G (8.MI,.962d) offers higher barrier (WVTR) and temperature resistance with increased stiffness when used in blends with LDPE, while keeping good processability. Blended with an appropriate LDPE quality for extrusion coating, it offers high melt curtain stabilities with final coatings for adapted heat resistance and good surface flatness. The improved ability to easily remove the re-crystallized curtain from the chill roll will also enable high gloss coating. For best adhesion results such products are typically run at elevated extrusion coating temperatures. AFFINITY Polyolefin Plastomers have been the industry s leading highperformance sealant resin for over 2 years. Consider using AFFINITY PT 1451G1 when your application demands excellent seal strength and low temperature sealability while also providing outstanding tear, abrasion, and environmental stress crack resistance. They are widely used in direct contact with metal or metal containing substrates, namely aluminium or metalized polyolefin films. As a non-hydroscopic polymer and with similar viscosity than LDPE, PRIMACOR Copolymers convert similar to LDPE. Table 4 presents the family of our PRIMACOR Copolymers for the extrusion coating market. Solutions for Better Packaging There s never been a better time to make Dow your source for products, technologies, and know-how as you strive for better, faster, more efficient ways to meet the demands of today s packaging marketplace.
