4 Letter from the Director Interna onal Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) is commi ed to providing culturally sensi ve services of the highest quaity to interna onal students and scholars. We are proud that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ranks 1 st amongst US public ins tu ons hos ng interna onal students (2 nd overall) and 12 th for scholars. The UIUC welcomed a record 2,678 new interna onal students to campus this fall. The top three countries represented were China (1259), South Korea (291) and India (268), accoun ng for 68% of our new student popula on. For the first year out of the last five years, new graduate degree students outnumbered new undergraduate degree students, with 1134 and 1133, respec vely. Incoming freshman were s ll the largest single group, numbering 893. We also welcomed 411 non-degree and professional students to campus this year. The number of enrolled interna onal students is also at an all- me high of 8,683, an increase of 7.8% from Fall Graduate degree students account for 48.3% (4191) of the interna onal enrollment, and comprise 43% of the overall graduate student popula on at the UIUC. Undergraduate degree students make up 46.7% (4058) of the interna onal student enrollment, and 14% of the overall UIUC undergraduate student popula on. In total, interna onal students comprise 20.3% of the student body at the UIUC. Our students represent 114 countries, with 84.7% coming from Asia. The top five countries of origin are: China (3,846), South Korea (1394), India (923), Taiwan (398) and Iran (128). From July 2011 through June 2012, the UIUC welcomed 1,947 interna onal faculty and staff to its campus. Nearly 26% were working and researching in Engineering, followed by 10.4% in Biological and Biomedical Sciences and another 10.4% in the Physical Sciences. The most represented country was China, with 707 faculty and staff, followed by South Korea (204), India (185), Brazil (75) and Germany (58). We at ISSS celebrate the presence of so many talented interna onal students, faculty and staff at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and we look forward to working with this special group of people in the upcoming year.
