Assignment #1 (New unit: Life has Genetic Material) DNA deoxyribonucleic acid LO: To model the structure of DNA. EQ: Describe the structure of DNA. (4-5 sentences, underline key words) AGENDA 11/5-11/6 1. Construct 2. Lecture 3. Worksheet HOMEWORK 1. Finish proc tasks 2. Lab if not finished LEVEL ZERO VOICE CATALYST (10 minutes, individual work): 1. What are examples of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids? 2. Draw a polymer of protein. 3. Draw a polymer of carbohydrates.

Fill out this chart: Macromolecules Monomers (what are the pieces called) Describe what is it for Examples 4

Assignment #11 Macromolecule Lab LO: To determine macromolecule content of different food solutions. EQ: How do scientists test for macromolecules? (4-5 sentences, underline key words) AGENDA 11/2-11/3 1. Lab Prep 2. Testing 3. Academic Recovery Assignments HOMEWORK 1. Finish proc tasks 2. Lab if not finished LEVEL ZERO VOICE CATALYST (10 minutes, individual work): 1. Fill out this chart: Macromolecules Monomers (what are the pieces called) Describe what is it for 1. Protein Amino acids Perform functions in cells Examples Enzymes, transport proteins 2. Carbohydrates monosaccharides Energy source Glucose, fructose, starch 3. Nucleic acid Nucleotide Passing traits, protein instructions DNA, RNA 4. Lipids Not a polymer (no building blocks) Made of C, H, O atoms, long term energy storage Fats, oils, phospholipids

Macromolecules are large molecules made of small repeating units Monomer- the small repeating subunit Polymer the large chain formed by monomers

Lipids fatty substance used for energy storage, signaling, structure Ex: cholesterol, fatty acid, phospholipids Found in butter, oil

Carbohydrates sugar molecule used for cellular respiration and energy storage monomer is monosaccharide. Polymer is called polysaccharide Ex: glucose, sucrose, fructose Found in starch, fruits, veggies

Proteins performs functions in cells monomer is amino acids Ex: insulin, adenine Found in meat, beans, dairy

Nucleic acid stores and transfers genetic material monomer is nucleotide Ex: DNA, RNA Found in every living organism

Nucleotide - has a phosphate group, 5-carbon sugar (pentose) and a nitrogenous base

Now figure out how to put DNA together.

What do you think the four bases of DNA are called?

What do you think the four bases of DNA are called? A C G T

What do you think the four bases of DNA are called? A C G T Do they come together randomly?

What do you think the four bases of DNA are called? A C G T Do they come together randomly? A/T G/C Why???

What do you think the four bases of DNA are called? A C G T Do they come together randomly? A/T G/C Why??? BECAUSE THAT S HOW THEY FIT TOGETHER!!!

Structure of DNA: Thought bubble quickwrite everything you just figured out about DNA

What do you think the four bases of DNA are called? The four nitrogenous bases (ATGC) create base-pairs: Adenine = A Thymine = T Guanine = G Cytosine = C

Purine bases - Adenine and guanine are purines. the bigger ones Draw as pentagon and hexagon

Pyrimidines - Cytosine and thymine Smaller of the bases Draw as a hexagon

Phosphatedeoxyribose backbone Base pairs in the middle

Glue this worksheet as a flip in your notebooks. Now, as a group, answer these questions.

Assignment #1 (New unit: Life has Genetic Material) DNA deoxyribonucleic acid LO: To model the structure of DNA. EQ:? (4-5 sentences, underline key words) AGENDA 11/4 1. Lab Prep 2. Testing 3. Academic Recovery Assignments HOMEWORK 1. Finish proc tasks 2. Lab if not finished LEVEL ZERO VOICE PROCESSING TASK (10 minutes, individual work): Write an 8 lined poem using all of the new vocab from today. Include a drawing (with at least 3 colors) Alternatives to poem: 4 haikus (line 1: 5 syllables, line 2: 7 syllables, line 3: 5 syllables) rap
