Today, the customised development and production of adhesive tapes is a highly extensive technological process. An essential aspect is seamless integration into the customer s production flow. 7 // The First Step We have everything in our sight. Right from the start. Whether adhesive tapes efficiently do their job depends on how they are integrated into the production process. In order to develop the best solution for you, we always keep the entire process and application in mind, from the very first discussion. Where exactly is the tape to be used? What characteristics should it have? What is the condition of the surfaces to be bonded? How can the tape be integrated smoothly and efficiently into your production process? 8 // Coating We put all of our know-how into each layer. Our wide range of chemical knowledge is used in the polymerisation and formulation of adhesives. Solvent-based, hotmelt, or eco-friendly dispersion adhesives are developed on the basis of natural rubber or acrylates, with the adhesive characteristics precisely matched to the respective application. During the subsequent coating onto carrier materials, such as foam, non-woven materials, films, paper, or fabric, our state-of-the-art manufacturing technology allows adhesive layers to be produced with the most stringent thickness tolerances.

As a converter for the mobile communication, automotive, consumer goods, graphical, building and construction, electrical and medical technology industries, we are familiar with the increasing market requirements for tighter manufacturing tolerances. Our own die-cutting centers offer the right solutions for this. Today, we can achieve tolerances that set new benchmarks in the area of precision during the production of adhesive die-cut parts, using state-of-the-art technology. Our high-quality standard is also demonstrated by our ISO-certified clean room, which keeps air pollution and dust particles to a minimum through use of multilevel filtering, sophisticated air-conditioning systems, and an antistatic production system. These are crucial quality criteria for manufacturing sensitive products, such as adhesive protective films for cell phone displays.

10 Menu // Customizing Polymerisation Have you only been received standard solutions all too often? At Lohmann, adhesives are polymerised on ultramodern machines. Proprietary polymers of the highest quality arise from the chemical reaction of different components. Formulation Then you should try our customised adhesive solutions. For you it means coating and converting à la maison! Our solutions are prepared according to your individual requirements and equipped with the best ingredients for more quality and efficiency. In other words: Solutions that completely suit your own taste. Additives give adhesives particular characteristics, which can then be adjusted to the subsequent application. Coating On our solvent, dispersion, and hotmelt machines, we coat acrylates and natural rubber adhesives onto lengths of the carrier material. In addition, the adhesive characteristics can be optimised through the use of cross-linking. Converting In accordance with your individual requirements, coated materials are converted into rolls, spools, and sheets. Laminating We laminate various materials and create product structures for specific applications. Your requirements determine the solutions we develop. Die Cutting Using our expertise, experience, and computer-controlled die-cutting machines, we develop high-quality, dimensionally accurate products with the tightest manufacturing tolerances. Quality testing Extensive testing and inspection procedures guarantee that our products meet the highest quality requirements. 11 // New Solutions Some things cannot be connected. For everything else, we will find a solution. The requirements placed on adhesive tape solutions are increasingly becoming more demanding. At the same time, the framework conditions for their use are changing. The best example of this: the automotive industry. With the introduction of low-energy nano-lacquers, components which could previously be fastened together easily, such as trim, suddenly could no longer be connected. New solutions had to be found. Without an experienced, well-equipped research and development department, or experienced application engineers, this would have been an almost unsolvable task. Accordingly, Lohmann has long been investing in creative personnel and cutting-edge equipment, in order to make the seemingly impossible, possible.

12 // Environment Mussel The mussel s quickly adhering adhesive plaque consists of proteins that are astonishingly similar to technical adhesives. Gecko The toes of the gecko have a hair-like microstructure which forms a strongly adhesive contact area that allows the gecko to run upside down. Barnacle The barnacle secretes an adhesive substance that consists of nanoscale globules and bonds excellently under water. Spider Polistine wasps The adhesive power of spider silk is based on microscopically fine wool and glue, which makes the web four times stronger than steel in relation to its weight. Termites Polistine wasps can digest wood cellulose with their digestive juices, which they mix with a sticky pulp to build their nests. Sundew Frog Almost like a bookbinding machine, certain kinds of termites can spray adhesive from a nozzle located on their heads in order to glue their enemies. The sundew produces small droplets that small insects stick to, thus providing food for the plant. The tongue of the frog is covered with an adhesive layer to which its prey, such as mosquitoes and flies, sticks to within a fraction of a second. We are not the only adhesive experts. And it should remain that way. Approximately 6,000 years ago, the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Egyptians discovered how to produce glue by boiling animal hides. However, the first adhesive solutions were not man-made, they were created by nature. Whether talking about a frog, a spider, an ant, or aphids, the body s own adhesive substances have proven efficient for innumerable species since the beginning of time. Despite all advances, it should remain that way. Responsibility for both the human race and the environment is a key part of Lohmann s company policy. Besides complying with the relevant environmental regulations and laws, we continuously optimise our internal environmental protection measures. Our goal is to use processes that have the lowest possible emissions and consume minimal energy and resources; starting with the choice of raw materials and suppliers, up to manufacturing methods and logistics, and finishing with cleaning and waste disposal.
