Public acceptance Nanotechnology with good governance and safety guideline. Trend of Nanotechnology Acceptance Year Sustainable Development is the Key! 5

National Coordination: Development of Thailand s National Nanotechnology Plan and Strategy National Nanotechnology Strategic Plan Master Plan of the National Nanotechnology Center National Nanotechnology Roadmap National Nanosafety Strategic Plan National Nano-safety Guideline 6

National Coordination: Activities Developing Nano-safety Roadmap (March/ Aug 2012) Developing of National Nano-safety Guidelines (2012) Organizing workshop and seminar in National Nanosafety& Ethic Strategic Plan (public hearing focus on human health, environment, and national security- March/April/Aug 2012) Certifying Nano Q as a standard nanomark for selected nano-products (2012) Collaborating with the National Chemical Safety Steering Committee (Aug 2012) Collaborating with Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) of OECD and the Sponsorship Programme (2012) 7

Key Outcomes to date: In vitro and In vivo studies Toxicity effects of TiO2 related to protein level and cell stress Irritation test of nanotio2-coated masks Effects of nanoparticles on the workers of nanomaterial manufactures Policy research National Nanosafety Strategic Plan Nanosafety Guideline for the Public Nanosafety Guidelines for Researchers Nanosafety Guidelines for Industries Nano-labelling Nano-safety networking with international organizations i.e. UNITAR, SAICM,OECD, IFCS, and ISO TC229 Testing & Standard Development of testing standard procedures for size measurement, anti-microbial and water repellent properties 8

Key Outcomes to date: Research National Nanosafety Strategic Plan Health Development Environment Public Participation Knowledge Management Vision: Safe Nano Propels Thailand Sustainably Security Production Establishment & Encouragement of Regulation & Marketing 9

Key Outcomes to date: Brand :. Model :.. Nano Q is a certified mark for nano products (Functional Textiles, Coating Materials, Household Products) which are certified by Nanotechnology Association of Thailand. Motivation to Have Nano Q Increase Public Trust :Facilitate healthy development of nanotecnology Protect Consumer :Avoid waste money Protect Good Companies : Eliminate unfair competitions between good and bad products Facilitate Trade : Stimulate economic growth 10

Lessons Learned: 11 Key Success Factors: 1. Strong commitment from the Government for human resources, infrastructure and budget is needed. 2. National coordinator or the secretary of nanotechnology development committee should be autonomous. 3. Timing and the coordination between national policy and implementation are crucial. 4. The synergy of R&D, Testing and Standardization Lab, and Policy Research are essential. 5. Key partners from academic, private sectors and government are essential. 6. Being aware that nanosafety is a sensitive issue; transparent working groups are important. 7. Being realized that nanotechnology is a new emerging issue; public awareness program is essential. 8. Information sharing and database might be needed

Next Steps: 12 To turn the Nanosafety Strategic Plan into the Action Plan Nanosafety Roadmap is a constructive milestone for each partner to visualize and convince them to have the same goal. Then, the Strategic Plan needs to be linked and integrated to the National Chemical Safety Plan, and eventually to their own plan. Nanosafety Guidelines will be implemented under the voluntary scheme for the first step. Public awareness program in safety will be strengthen and start from elementary school. Thailand will extend the collaboration in Nanosafety framework to other countries through international organizations i.e UNITAR, APEC, Asia Nano Forum, and OECD.
