3 About Biotechnology Biotechnology is the use of technology and biology to solve some of today's most urgent cultural and scientific issues. Biotechnology is a fascinating multidisciplinary science. It acquired knowledge from chemistry, Biochemistry, genetics, genetic engineering for the inherent behavior of microbes or cultured cells for the technological applications. Biotechnology helps in the application of genetically modified biological agents such as bacteria, virus and yeast for the betterment of the human kind. A degree in biotechnology paves the way to a career in one of the many businesses and research facilities that make up the biotech industry. The array of programs offered is vast. Some focus on producing skilled researchers, managers, and laboratory technicians; others prepare the student for doctorates and post-doctoral work. About Genetics Genetics is a study of heredity and variation. Genetic screens are powerful methods for the discovery of gene phenotype few computational methods for gene function prediction have been rigorously tested for their performance on a genome-wide scale in vivo. Head of the Department: Prof. Asha K K, M.Sc, B. Ed. Foreword The department is organized into two main streams Department of Biotechnology and Department of Genetics. There are 4 full time lecturers headed by 1 professor. This department graduates more that 100 under graduate students and about 50 post graduate students empowered with technical skills to face the current industrial requisites. This department was established in the year 2000 and being greatly improvised in terms of faculty recruitment, curriculum and infrastructure. The department is also provided with sophisticated equipments like PCR, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, CO2 incubator to name a few. The department is also equipped exclusively with Plant tissue culture lab and Animal cell culture lab.
