3 Ms. Jeannette ebartolomeo ecember 0 Groundwater samples were collected on October 0 and submitted to TestAmerica Laboratories of Nashville, Tennessee for analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), naphthalene, and fuel oxygenates using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 0B and for biogeochemical parameters including sulfate (Method 0A), nitrate (Method.), and total iron (Method 00B). issolved iron was not analyzed during this sampling event. Nitrate/Nitrite, Iron, and Sulfate were analyzed out of temperature for MW-A, MW- A, MW-A, MW-, MW-0, MW-, MW-, MW-, and MW- due to one of the coolers getting delayed during shipment. Nitrate/Nitrite and Iron for MWA were also analyzed out of temperature. Please refer to the Case Narrative section of the laboratory report for details. Monitoring well gauging and sampling data are summarized on Table and depicted on Figure. No liquid phase hydrocarbon (LPH) was detected during this reporting period. Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) samples collected included a duplicate sample (collected from MW-A), daily rinsate blanks, and trip blanks. The TestAmerica laboratory groundwater analytical reports are attached as Appendix A. October 0 Potable Well Sampling The potable well and POET system at Old Bayview Road and the potable well at Old Bayview Road were sampled on October 0. Results are summarized on Table and were submitted to the property owners under separate cover. Groundwater Sampling Results Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds Constituents of concerns (COCs) including benzene, ethylbenzene, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), and naphthalene were detected at concentrations exceeding ME Groundwater (GW) Clean-up Standards at one or more wells: Benzene was detected at concentrations exceeding the ME GW standard ( µg/l) in three samples (MW-A, MW-A, and MW-A) with a maximum concentration of µg/l in the sample collected from MW-A. Naphthalene was detected at concentrations exceeding the ME GW standard (0. µg/l) in four samples (MW-A, MW-A, MW-A, and MW-) with a maximum concentration of 0 µg/l in the sample collected from MW-A. Analysis of Monitored Natural Attenuation Parameters Geochemical indicator parameters can provide an additional line of evidence to document favorable groundwater conditions for ongoing attenuation mechanisms and evaluate the potential biodegradation processes that may be occurring within the impacted area. Many common groundwater COCs, including benzene, can serve as sources of carbon and/or energy for naturally-occurring bacteria, and biodegradation of organic COCs can occur by both aerobic and anaerobic microbial processes. Bacteria obtain energy for cell production and maintenance by facilitating reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions involving the transfer of electrons from electron donors (i.e., the target substrate or COC) to available electron acceptors. In aerobic environments, oxygen serves as the electron acceptor and becomes reduced while the primary substrate is oxidized. Oxidation of the primary substrate results in its mineralization to harmless byproducts, carbon dioxide and water. In anaerobic environments, other inorganic compounds act as electron acceptors and become reduced while the primary substrate is oxidized. Anaerobic oxidation processes consume these alternate electron acceptors in the following order of preference: nitrate (nitrate reduction), manganese (manganese [IV] reduction), ferric iron (ferric iron reduction), sulfate (sulfate reduction), and carbon dioxide (methanogenesis). The key bacteria involved in anaerobic oxidation are widely distributed in the natural environment. enitrifying, iron, and sulfate bacteria use nitrate, oxidized iron and manganese, and sulfate as electron acceptors, and subsequently reduce them to nitrite or nitrogen gas, dissolved (ferrous) iron and manganese, and hydrogen sulfide, respectively. Methanogens use carbon dioxide as an electron acceptor, reducing it to methane. Monitored natural attenuation (MNA) data including biogeochemical samples (sulfate, nitrate, and total iron) and field parameters (ph, conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen [O], and oxygen-reduction potential [ORP]) were collected during the th quarter 0 sampling event. When O is less available, anaerobic biodegradation processes utilize alternate electron acceptors, and groundwater conditions become more reducing. The O concentration measured in wells where concentrations of COCs remain above the ME GW Clean-up Standards (MW-A, MW-A, MW-A, and MW-) were less than 0. milligrams per liter (mg/l) in all but one well (MW- had a concentrations of. mg/l), while O measured at many surrounding un-impacted wells was higher. O concentrations within the impacted area are depleted relative to background O concentrations and indicate that microbial activity and consumption of oxygen during biodegradation processes is occurring within the plume area and anaerobic groundwater conditions are prevalent in the impacted area. Once dissolved oxygen has been depleted, nitrate is used by denitrifying microorganisms under anaerobic conditions as an electron acceptor to oxidize organic carbon (nitrate reduction). uring this process, nitrate (NO ) is reduced to nitrite (NO ), which can be further reduced to molecular nitrogen (N). Nitrate was detected at concentrations ranging from non-detect in MW-A, MW-A, and MW-A to. mg/l in MW-, an un-impacted well. In wells where concentrations of COCs remain above the ME GW Clean-up Standards (MW- A, MW-A, MW-A and MW-, nitrate levels were non-detect at MW-A, MW- A, and MW-A, and 0.0 mg/l at MW-. These data indicate that nitrate reduction is occurring within the plume in the impacted areas, suggesting consumption of nitrate to facilitate biodegradation of groundwater COCs. However, the low concentrations in un-impacted (background) wells indicate that this is likely a minor degradation mechanism. Iron reduction is an anaerobic redox reaction in which bacteria use ferric iron, Fe(III), as an electron acceptor to facilitate biodegradation of organic compounds in the absence of O, nitrate, and Mn(IV). When ferric iron is used as an electron acceptor, it is reduced to soluble ferrous iron, Fe(II), resulting in increased concentrations of dissolved iron. Total Iron was detected at concentrations ranging from. mg/l at MW- to. mg/l at MW-. In wells where concentrations of COCs remain above the ME GW Clean-up Standards (MW-A, MW-A, MW-A, MW-, and MW-), total iron levels were detected at. mg/l (MW-A),. mg/l (MW-A), 0. mg/l (MW-A), and. mg/l (MW-). issolved iron was not analyzed during this event. Based on data from previous sampling events, the presence of dissolved iron at higher concentrations in the wells where concentrations of COCs remain above the ME GW Clean-up Standards compared to wells in un-impacted areas, along \\arcadis-us\officedata\millersville-m\prjcts\exxonmobil Retail\M- NORTHEAST\Reports\0 Q GMR\PF\M 0Q GMR.doc Page: /

Sulfate reduction is an anaerobic redox reaction in which sulfate is used as an electron acceptor to oxidize organic carbon. When sulfate is used as an electron acceptor (in the absence of O, nitrate, Mn[IV], and Fe[III]), it is reduced to sulfide. Sulfate reduction results in decreased sulfate concentrations relative to background and indicates a strongly reducing groundwater environment. Sulfate was detected at concentrations ranging from non-detect (less than milligram per liter [(mg/l)]) in MW-A, MW-A, and MW-A to. mg/l in MW-A. In wells where concentrations of COCs remain above the ME GW Clean-up Standards (MW-A, MW-A, MW-A, and MW-), sulfate levels ranged from non-detect at MW-A, MW-A, and MW-A to. mg/l at MW-. The presence of lower sulfate concentrations in impacted wells relative to unimpacted wells (background) at this site indicate that sulfate is being utilized and is facilitating anaerobic degradation of organic carbon via sulfate reduction. Other Field Parameters ph levels were detected at concentrations ranging from. at MW- to.0 at MW-. The ph has an effect on microbial populations and activity with a generally preferred range of to. Conductivity levels were detected at concentrations ranging from 0.0 microsiemens per centimeter (ms/cm) at MW- to. ms/cm at MW-0 and were within historical ranges, indicating the samples were representative of the target saturated zone. Temperature of the groundwater ranged from. degrees Celsius ( C) at MW- to 0. C at MW- and were within historical ranges. Temperature affects the metabolic rate of bacteria and the solubility of geochemical species including oxygen. ORP was detected at concentrations ranging from -.0 millivolts (mv) at MW- A to.. mv at MW-. The ORP is a measure of the electron activity and influences rates of biodegradation. 7 Ms. Jeannette ebartolomeo ecember 0 Summary The geochemical parameters analyzed in samples collected in October 0 indicate that oxygen, nitrate, sulfate, and iron reduction are occurring to varying degrees at the Site. Relatively high background concentrations and depletion within the impacted area as well as ORP data indicate that sulfate reduction may be one of the predominant mechanisms. These results provide evidence that microbial activity is contributing to degradation of COC impacts in groundwater. Therefore, hydrocarbon concentrations in the groundwater should decrease over time as residual mass is incorporated into the aquifer and destroyed by microbial activity. Activities Planned for Next Period (First Quarter 0) Activities proposed for the First Quarter 0 include quarterly groundwater gauging and sampling. All groundwater monitoring wells and injection wells will be gauged to determine the depth to groundwater. Groundwater samples will be collected from wells MW-A, MW-A, MW-A, MW-A, MW-, and MW-0 through MW- and analyzed for full list VOCs and fuel oxygenates using EPA Method 0B, sulfate (Method 0A), nitrate (Method.), and dissolved and total iron (Method 00B). Field parameters, such as dissolved oxygen and ph, will be recorded as part of the standard sampling protocol. Potable wells will continue to be sampled at and Old Bayview Road properties.
