3 Thank You to Our Sponsors! ASCLS-IN gratefully acknowledges the following organizations for their generous material and financial support. This meeting would not be possible without them! CLMA Cepheid Siemens Healthcare Krysta Hamilton Graphic Design Educational Program #1 Quality Beer Requires a Quality Lab (B) Kevin Smolar, Quality Manager Sun King Brewing The keynote address will discuss life in a brewery lab, the career pathway, the current and future states of craft brewing, and the importance of laboratory work in all industries. Join us for this entertaining session as we introduce our day s theme: Brewing Up Organic Thoughts. #2 Platelets and the Immune Defense Mechanisms (I) J. Lynne Williams, Ph.D., MLS Oakland University Platelets are typically recognized for their role in primary hemostasis. However, they make a number of unappreciated contributions to human physiology and homeostasis, including important roles in the immune response and inflammation. Ongoing research is revealing important contributions of platelets in relation to infectious syndromes, and potential new therapeutic targets. #3 Barriers to Modern Laboratory Medicine in the Third World (I) Theodore Kieffer, M.D., MS Indiana University Health, Fellow in Clinical Microbiology Description coming soon!

4 Educational Program, continued #4 Systems-based Hematology: Hematopathology In and Beyond your Lab (I) Alex Mann, M.D. Indiana University School of Medicine, Resident Hematopoietic disorders present in various ways and may be recognized in a variety of settings. Data from a single patient is generated in many different anatomic and clinical pathology laboratories. Knowledge of these systems-based practices is incorporated into the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing and interpretation. #5 Targeting Immune Checkpoints the Latest and Greatest in Cancer Treatments (I) J. Lynne Williams, Ph.D., MLS Oakland University Although it was proposed more than a century ago that the immune system could potentially be effective in fighting cancer, cancer cells have evolved a number of mechanisms to evade the immune response, rendering it ineffective. Recently several new anti-cancer drugs have been approved which are drastically changing therapy for a number of human cancers. #6 Session to be sponsored by, topic to be announced soon #7 Cardiac Troponin: Impact of Assay Sensitivity on Patient Management (I) Linda C. Rogers, Ph.D., DABCC, FACB Siemens Patients presenting with the chief complaint of chest pain or chest discomfort need to be assessed for an acute myocardial infarction (MI) vs. other causes of chest pain. It is vital that this assessment be made as quickly and accurately as possible to make sure the patient receives the best possible care. This presentation will discuss the diagnostic use of a sensitive cardiac troponin assay. #8 The Role of On-Demand Molecular Testing in HAIs: C. Difficile and CRE (I) Deidre Jarrett, MT(ASCP) Cepheid The use of molecular diagnostics has become a valuable component of infection control bundles to effectively manage and prevent hospital associated infections. In this presentation we will review the use of on demand molecular testing for the detection of Clostridium difficile and Carbapenem Resistant Organisms (CRE). #9 The Impact of a Massive Fetomaternal Bleed on the Clinical Laboratory (B) Lesa Nelson, MT(ASCP) Michigan State University, Graduate Student This case study describes the occurrence of a silent and massive fetomaternal bleed that was first recognized at the time of delivery of an infant at Hendricks Regional Health. Collaboration between blood bank, hematology, and physicians was vital to achieving a successful outcome for mother and child. Lab results and challenges as they relate to this emergent condition will be discussed. I: Intermediate (Some prior knowledge necessary); B: Basic (No prior knowledge necessary)
